  • Teach yourself?

Hi there, i know from what i have read, and i have read a lot of books/guides, that it is highly recomended to join a club to learn to fly. The impression i get is that it is virtually imposible to teach yourself. So i would like to hear if people have managed and what problems they had along the way. I am very tempeted to give it a go if i can find a shop to have a look over my heli once built. Any advice would be great.

    Thanks
    Oli

I learnt by myself but in a club enviroment with experienced members to keep an eye on me and make sure i stayed safe

Had no tuition as such though

I would strongly recommend joining a club,
What do you intend to fly, leccy or Nitro?

There are many good flying schools around and these are worth serious consideration..

My learning by myself was costly
And i brought the wrong model

I plan on getting a raptor 30, i have already got most the parts except the heli. I have a ff9 chp, irvine 36 ringed engine, 401 gyro ( and the correct servo cant remember the number ). Do you think i need to get better servos than came with the ff9 ( came with 4x s3001 ) also are govenors benificial for a beginer? I would love to join a club but my local one has a massive waiting list which kind of puts me off.

        Ok

        Good engine,good Radio,good gyro and tail servo(9254)
The Standard 3001`s are fine to be going on with..

The Raptor 30 is a good choice, arguably the most common sense 30 on the market

Very good learning machine, very good machine for learning aerobatics etc as you progress, easily upgraded to a 50 size should you wish to and parts are about as cheap as it gets

The Raptor 30 is tried and tested and is a very sound heli

Governors are not essential for learning...

Dont get drawn in to using a high Nitro fuel,,you wont need it,save your cash for any mishaps

Your choice of equipment is very good and will do you proud, try looking further afield to the neaxt nearest club maybe

teaching yourself is a long and slow process. trust me...

i did it by lots of research on the net, a sim and a micro. wasted a year doing that. wish i had just spent the money on a 50 earlier.

Thanks for the advice. The reason i was thinking about the govenor was from what i have read it eliminates the need for throttle curves, or have i got this totally wrong? which i thought would make things a bit easyer to set up? If i were to get one i was thinking about the GV-1 do you have any experiance with this, is it any good?

            thanks

Ade_Law did you end up joining a club and getting help in the end or did you manage to learn solo?

Not had a GV1 so cant comment

Throttle Jockey and Revlock are OK though

You wont need to fiddle with a throttle curve as such with a governor, just leave it as its default staight line...

Its easy enough to set a curve up though, especially for learning

a governors are a complication you don't need when your learning... there's enough to take in... also can be dangerous if not set correctly
makes you learn how to setup properly.
I learnt everything myself but was in a club and had no help.... now the other heli flyers come to me for help .....no thanks
                  cheers Lee

If it ain't broke fix it until it is
yes i'm an idiot and no i couldn't care any less

oli im suprised Ade hasnt already said but you should be looking at a good sim to
Phoenix is the sim of choice for most on this forum,
Im in a club but we have no heli flyers so iam sort of teaching my self, When i can get a slot at the field the sim has helped me a lot, And i would recommend you get one it will save you a lot of money in the long run
If you cant get into a club where are you gonna fly,
You will need some insurance you can join the BMFA as a country member and be insured thru them its around £26.00 per year

It's certainly possible to teach yourself the mechanics of flying - ultimately most of us do that - the really essential part you should get help in is the final pre-flight check and then an inititial test flight to make sure a) there aren't any dangerous problems (like a reversed gyro) and secondly to make sure it's optimally setup a) on the heli - balanced blades - square swash - synchronised CPM b) on the radio - pitch / throttle curves as this makes the heli sooo much easier to fly. Don't be tempted by an electric micro - though they look the part they are very skitty and you can guarantee a repair to fly ratio of around 30:1

I have a sim (areo fly pro delux) and have been putting a bit of time in every day, can hover nose in fine and do figures of eight just about. I have started to look a bit further afield for club, but even my nearest one has to be a 45min drive away. Is it actually ilegal to fly in public spaces?
