  • Help with reassembling IC engine

Any tips on getting piston back in piston sleeve as the piston ring is protuding greater than the sleeve. I was wondering if a small cable tie over it might help? Any suggestions?

Make sure the ring gap lines up with the guide pin in the piston, and just gently ease the liner down over it at a slight angle and without twisting it.
It should go on relatively easily.

Hi I've managed to get the engine reassembled bar the carb. Is this usually held onto the engine with two hex bolts or via one bolt through the engine and carb and then a nut tightened to the other side?
Just can't seem to find the original bolts/screws and trying to figure it out

Also I have a metal shim that looks like it is from the engine as it sits perfectly in the recessed areas of the cooling head. However when I reassemble the engine with the shim it slips down and falls into the piston sleeve causing the engine to jam when rotating the crankshaft. Is there any solution to this problem?

There is a head shim that can be used in engines, but the sleeve (the liner) should hold it in place when the head and the engine body are fastened together.

I'm not sure if you are using the correct parts is something is falling into the engine?

Can you post any pictures as this is hard to follow by description alone?

              Cheers,

Here are some photos of the engine. You'll notice I've put a bolt through the carb into the engine. I started thinking about this and was thinking to myself what on earth had I done with the screws as I was sure there were a couple of short M3 silver screws and I had kept everything in a fishing box organiser. Then I remembered when reassembling the helicopter I had a few bolts/screws left over as I was rebuilding using a lot of new fixings from my hardware pack. Some of the screws I'd put into a pile as they looked non-genuine as they didn't match anything in the hardware pack. So I just went through this pile and found a couple of short M3 silver screws so I'll put them in the carb. The only issue I have now is with the shim.

After looking at the engine closely I noticed that the silver ring just inside where the bolts are is actually the shim and is removable. The other peice of metal is a washer from somewhere. Will have to try and figure out where that bit comes from

It certainly looks like the sleeve won't pin the shim in position in the head?
Was the shim in there before and was the engine running and working with it in?

What nitro percentage do you use in your fuel?

Lower nitro (10% - 15%) might not need the shim in the head...

                            Cheers,

Well this is the thing Rob, I've never flown this heli as it was bought off of eBay and was in a poor state when recieved. I never even fired up the engine when I recieved it as there was many things wrong with the helicopter so I never even bothered. The black washer/shim I don't think came from inside the engine. I've found the proper shim and it sits over the piston sleeve and is wafer thin peice of silver metal.

I'm going to have a look around and see if I can figure out where this washer comes from. I'll look over the engine, crankshaft, clutch, cooling fan etc aswell as the heli itself.
