  • Range checks

Just about to change over to a quick uk base loaded aerial.

Before I do, what range should I expect from an aerial down check, with the normal wire aerial? Flat, clear ground. I can then do a comparison, but I need to know what a good starting point is

    Thanks

I think JR claim 30 metres with Tx antenna down

If in doubt, range check it with current antenna then compare with new one

I've just put the Quick UK base loaded aerial onto my raptor. Fixed to the undercart leg pointing forwards.

Range checked it out in the road & got at least 35 yds aerial down. Couldn't go any further on this occasion & the Rx was still responding.

I'm assuming this is plenty for normal use...unless someone knows better!!

                  Dumb question I'm sure, but...

If I get around 35-40 yds range test, aerial down....then presumably with aerial up the safe range will be far in excess of that.

Bear in mind the heli is going to be well.well within sight, I'm not good enough to let it get beyong 100yds or so cos I tend to lose the orientation, and that's crash time!!

PS Ta for all the great advice

The tx antenna up range should be approx 1km or so with most systems (well out of acceptable sight for a heli, or probably ok to fly a 150mph jet fixed wing).
The tx is not designed to work antenna down and the radiated power could be a very small fraction of what it is antenna up.
You will get VASTLY more antenna up. In fact although your system seems to work well at 30 yards antenna down, if you ever forgot to put the antenna up you'd probably think the control was a bit wierd, sluggish and imprecise at 15 yards! (don't ask me how I know this, it was a long long time ago!).

Which is the whole point of doing a range test with aerial down

Unless of course you are prepared to walk half a mile or more with your model to check your range which infers in certain places range testing is not something that is done very often

"walk half a mile or more with your model"

Do you mean half a mile or more FROM your model?
not recommended to leave your trex that far away in you local park, or the chav youths will have a new toy.
(mind you 100 yards antenna up is good enough for a little electric!)
