  • Base loaded aerial

In an attempt to tidy things up & possibly avoid snagging the wire aerials in the fields I fly in I am thinking of installing base loaded aerials on my Swift & Raptor.

Are they any good? A small decrease in range will not matter to me so, as they look so much smarter and tidier, are they OK?

    If so, which one?

    Thanks all

i have used a deans base loaded antenna in a gasser and a scale model with no noticeable range loss.

not tried in leccy models like the swift, dont know if that would affect things.
do you use pcm in the swift?

(just for info:- pcm in the gasser and ppm in the scale model)

I know you mean one for the RX but I use one the JR one on my transmitter and love it, I've had electric gliders and planks nearly out of sight and still had control.

      .... that includes Align ones

Yes, just changed to PCM on the electric, (thankfully this has stopped glitching) & still PPM on the Raptor.

        Just fancy tidier installations

Deans...is that a brand or type of aerial??

        Thanks

yes "deans whip" is a brand name.

have heard of people using them on rex's so would guess will be ok on yer swift.

A mate and me put one on his Trex yesterday and it almost halfed the range check

It wasn't a deans though - can't remember what make it was

With the aerial up it will make little difference to the flyable range, Heli will be a dot before range is an issue

                  Quick UK do something similar.

If you feel confident you can make something perfectly functional with 7" of copper wire from a twin and earth cable soldered to a 10 micro henry choke, heatsrinked and sleeved and soldered to your Rx with the standard cable cut down to 4".

quick UK one is prettier though

I have a Quick one here, never used it, prefered the ones I made my self...

Cheers for the advice so far. Looks like I might treat myself to a couple of Quickies...upgrades that is!

I'm thinking backwards facing on the electric, away from the electrics/servos etc, forward on the Raptor, or doesn't it matter other than cosmetics/practicality?

I have a Deans on my trex facing backwards as is the quick one on my titan. Deans available from motors and rotors, absolutly no probs.
