  • Do I really need a governor?

As a beginner - is it worth buying a governor?

nope a good throttle curve will do until you start 3D'ing

A good throttle curve & a radio that gives throttle mixing will keep you well into heavy sports flying - loops. inverted, rolls etc.

That's where I'm at & don't feel the need for a governor yet. I believe it teaches you better stick/collective management too.
You can teach a man everything. Apart from experience.

I have flown a governor for years but I started without one. A governor can mask tuning issues so its best to set up an engine without the governor initially anyway - it also means you have to set up a good throttle curve which is no bad thing even when running a governor in case the governor should fail...

As such I say dont bother with one until you feel you need one...

No need for a governor until you are at least flying fast circuits.
BobJ told me he never flew a .50 with a governor until align started putting them in the NSP kit box!

I started flying my Raptor 30 without one and set the throttle curve to the best I could having never done it before. I was getting by hovering and doing some very limited forward flight but then I managed to pick up a revlock 10 governor and after it was fitted it became much easier to maintain a steady height as the head speed was fixed.

So no you don't need one and yes it's a good idea to tune your engine without it and get a semi decent throttle curve in your TX but for me it made flying easier which is no bad thing when you at the beginner level as I am.
