  • Rolls - HOW?

    Hi All

I am trying to fly my 250 inverted inside my nissen hut. The inverted hovering tail in is okay, but I can't roll neatly. I either do a huge U (on the inverted side and / or the upright side) or drop loads of altitude.

I have gone out tonight and promptly crashed the 250 (again sigh!) and then put 5 packs through the 450 just trying to do nice rolls. every now and then I can roll without moving too much, but usually I take up way more sky than I want.

I understand the start rolling - zero pitch - roll hard full stick - apply slight negative pitch at the end - the trouble is that this seems to be a feely thing rather than a flying thing.

What I mean is, with the range of heli's that I have, and the LARGE number if rebuilds that I do, zero pitch is not always EXACTLY at centre stick, and I guess that you have to throw the inputs in rather than roll and adjust during the roll?

All I want to do is to roll inverted without moving (much).

Any tips, advice or pi** taking please?

    Gareth

It's all in the stick timings!

And you definitely need to get your helis setup so that zero is at centre stick to help you learn this - it'll be a nightmare for you otherwise!

      Great, thanks Rob.

Just a thought though - maybe a bit more info might be useful here?

        Sim practice will help.

I have the same problem and its all down to collective management.
Adding too much negative too early will make the heli push across in a U shape.

I find this very difficult as im worried about the heli losing too much height, when you get it right you can roll on the spot.. but I cant get it right yet either

            LOL Steve
The point I was getting at here was that Gareth can already do a roll, it is just U shaped. To keep it on the spot, it is all in the timing of the pitch...

            Gareth's got it... more practice
            LOL
            Cheers,

Remembering how I first started learning or should I say plucking courage to do rolls I first perfected the loops with 1, 2% neg once I mastered that then I used same method with rolls now it just becomes natural.

                  Hi Andy

250's crash better than larger heli's - but well over £1000 in spares so far......

                        Hi

I have had it since Feb (when I started flying), and have spent huge amounts of time trying to get it setup perfectly, so much so that some people bring their 250's to me to rebuild and setup. I've sorted most of the issues on these, but not all.

I learnt nose in on the 250 in a small garden (before I bought a field) and love it to bits, but have gone through three new kits amongst many, many other spares (I've a collection of over 20 knackerd main blade grips for example......)

...now I want to use it to learn inverted circuits.....I can only dream....

Anyway, the thing is IMHO the 250 is brilliant to learn things on - not intimidating, not expensive and once I've learnt something on the 250 the larger heli's feel easy.

I know I know I know - use the sim - much cheaper!

Light travels faster than sound, this is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak....

                            Hi

Yes, I have a 450, 600 and Srimok (which I am very afraid to fly becuase I can't afford to fix it).

The thing is, the 250 is a brilliant heli, and if I learn anything on that then it seems to help a lot more on the larger heli's.

Are you talking stationary rolls, or moving rolls ?

But, whatever the answer, you can get a better idea of the pitch timing, and the amount of pitch, if you do consecutive rolls. But you do need to learn when to bail out !

You said about applying a little bit of negative, er.....think about that, you need as much negative as positive, otherwise the roll will be misshaped. You also need to be at zero pitch when knife edge.

If you're doing stationary rolls, try give a small, quick, dab of positive pitch before you start the roll, this will get the heli moving upwards, otherwise you will lose height as soon as you're at knife edge. Initially you will overdo this, but with practice you'll start to reduce it so it becomes imperceptible. Once you're moving this become unnecessary.

If you doing moving rolls, try centring the right stick for a instant before you start the roll, this will remove any unwanted elevator input. Start out by moving and rolling quickly, then as you practice and get better, start slowing it down.

Hope this helps, but above all practice, practice, practice

Why does it always persist down at weekends ?
