  • A-Test Figure 8 Help

    Hi all,

I've been getting a 'lot' of practice in on Pheonix since I got it last week and have decided to try flying the full A-Test 'schedule' despite yet putting my Eolo in the air (waiting on batteries) and I'm coming a bit unstuck.

When I read the 'figure 8' part it states that it's a hovering manouver but that the heli must not be skidded around the turns on the tail alone. What I'm finding is that when I try to use bank and fly a co-ordinated turn, I either have to carry a fair bit of forward airspeed to keep the heli moving forward and stop it sliding sideways out of the turn, or I have to use less roll and more tail resulting in a more skid like turn. Is there a happy medium as I'm finding that the Knight .50 needs about 15/20 mph to keep the turns co-ordinated with a reasonable amount of bank.

    Hope you can help.

    Figure 8

    Hi!
It sounds like you are flying a tight 8, all manouvers can be nice and 'big', use the sky, as long as you are not flying over anything ie. pits, roads, houses etc. But remember, it must cross directly infront of the pilot, height control and speed is of the essence. It's not a race, control and consistencey is what the examiners looking for.

Doing it on a sim is much more demanding than the real thing, there's nothing like real stick time at the field!!!! Good luck!

P.S. Blink those eyes and breathe!!!!

      Diolch!

Really, thanks - I'll try opening the turns out and give that a go - the new Lipo arrived for the Spirit today so it's just a case of charging it up and biting the bullet now...

Yes I do, loving it too - got a question about the knight as well so I'll post that seperately.

Have a look at the Test Standards. A careful read should tell you exactly what you want to know. I would not call a 30 metre figure of 8, a big manoeuvre.
