Hello all,
new to this forum so please don't be harsh if I'm not up to speed with all the jargon and whatnot. I earnestly promise to go through the 'back catalogue' of posts to pick up as much of it as I can without asking too many newbie questions.
A bit about me then a question if I may?
Always liked rc stuff when I was a kid and spent many of the hours I should have been at school drooling outside Beaties in Holborn, London.
I ended up going down the electric car route as living where I do petrol was never going to be an option and as for planes and helicopters - that was strictly adult stuff in 80's from what I remember and i couldn't have afforded it anyway.
Fast forward 20 years and I bought myself a top of the line Tamiya off road car and thoroughly enjoyed building it and then thoroughly didn't enjoy driving it.
Caught onto (yes, you knew it was coming sooner or later- laugh at will)..... a Picooz which to all but experienced here i.e. everyone but me , was a total revelation.
Although I didn't have much floor space to play with I had all of this spare cubic footage to run a small helicopter in. I quickly bought the Tandem version and a thing called The Atlas which failed out of the box.
Anyway, the bottom line was I was hooked. Just hovering and getting the thing to land gracefully was fun and strangely meditative.
I simply couldn't (and to some degree still can't ) believe that I could have my own rc helicopter for less that 30 quid!
Ive now got 5 of them:-
The Atlas that never worked
2 Chinook-style twin blades both out of commission
1 'Metro city' out of commission
1 combat style single blade charging as I type.
About a month ago I started looking at what the options would be if i wanted to take things a little further (there's only so many way s of sticking bluetack on the nose right?). What I was after was little more control, no styrofoam, more natural and realistic flight characteristics, no styrofoam, something that might work both indoors and perhaps on a very calm day outdoors and not forgetting no more styrofoam.
Ive done a fair bit of reading but quite frankly I don't know my brushless motor from my swash plate so it's not been easy.
I reckon something like the Walkera 4:3b brushless metal edition or the forthcoming E flite Blade MSR could be the sort of direction I want to head in and wondered what you all thought? ( yes , I read the cx2 piece in FAQ's but it's bit hefty and the two above might offer more of a long-term learning curve. Simulation software seems a great idea but as with many bits of software, they don't make it for a mac user like me)
I had a look at the manual in pdf format and got utterly confused by some 'mode' diagrams which made me think I'm in way to deep and I should stick to the 'z's'
Anyway,
that's me
thanks for listening, I'm off to the pub for a nightcap
regards
