  • Stooopid Qu I now, but.....

Why is that I find it soooo much easier to fly helis in Phoenix when I switch the Gyro setting from Heading Hold to Rate. I thought HH was the preferred gyro for heli flying. I especially notice it on the Trex 500/600's when I change the settings in the tailrotor adjustment field. Is it supposed to be easier to fly helis with rate gyros as opposeed to HH gyros?

Probably a really daft question I suspect, but it's been bugging me tonight...

As I understand it, in Rate mode, the heli "wethervanes", ie, in FF, the tail will follow which way you are pointing. This makes it much easier to fly lazy 8's, etc. THe problem comes if you then start to do manouevres where you want the tail to stay where you put it. You then need HH. Therefore, it makes more sense to learn the control needed to do turns, etc with HH from day one. HTH.

More experienced guys jump in if I got it wrong.

      Cheers Bri,

I do find the tail following my forward flight, and lazy 8's are very straight fwd as you say in 'rate' mode. A little concerned that I might get too used to this style...

      only time will tell...

Well, I did try rate mode myself on Phoenix, thought "this is a doddle", but then thought maybe it was too easy, cos my 500 is set up (natch) to use HH. So, I persevere in Phoenix using HH. It's a lot more difficult, but when you manage a really smooth turn, it's very rewarding! (Doesn't happen that often )
