  • Ready To Fly Now,,,

Hello guys.... hope you have all been ok and enjoying your heli's.....
Well i managed to stop the head turning (spinning) on my heli and i didnt even have to adjust anything,,, im so dumb because all the problem was i never pushed to tail blades on properly so they was lose,, when i pushed them in the heli stop head turning so i never had to touch the adjustment screw.

Anyway i took my heli to the model shop today to find out if i had the blades set up ok and to ask if the screw was for adjusting, and it was the adjuster screw...

i said the the young boy who was working there at the time does he know how to fly heli's and could he check mine so he said to me i will show you, so he picked up my heli and said me main blades was abit tight so he made them nice and loose put the heli on the floor, then looked at me and turned it on and started flying around the shop....lol.... i was like wow how cool my baby can fly
so i was well happy BUT the boy made it look so bloody easy, when i tryed i still could not get the thing off the floor..... ALOT MORE PRACTISE FOR ME I THINK

i know heli's are hard to fly but because this is my 2nd heli i thought i would be able to fly in about an hour or atleast hover,, how wrong was i...lol...
but i dont mind its still great fun just very hard..

when i was in the shop i got a flight simulator and controler aswell i thought it would help me practise and save my heli from being smashed up,,lol

i got home played on the sim it was very very easy so i was like time to fly the real thing now. so i tryed and tryed and tryed some more but still couldnt get it to hover, i was to scared of brakeing it.
so i moved my room around and i was ready.!!!

i tryed flying the heli with the training kit on but it didnt like it so took it off, i was trying to fly for nearly 2 hours and only got the heli about 5 inches of the floor before i had to land or stop because of the walls and stuff,
    but i did have fun

the heli's are strong aswell i crashed in to my bed and it was fine crashed into the wall 2 times and it was still fine... so i started to get abit brave i got my heli off the floor hoverd right by my face it was very close lol..
so i landed the heli well kind of i hit the floor abit harder then i wanted and snaped the landing gear.... BUT MAN IT WAS SO WORTH IT GREAT FUN!

but i can fix that easy i have some great glue so its all GOOD.. i cant wait untill i next have another try...

ANY YOU GUYS GOT ANY FLYING TIPS FOR ME I THINK I NEED THEM

Marc, try clearview, it is a 40 min demo and for 30 USD it will give you a not bad sim with panoramic views ( lik that in the higher end sims).

Its a long and frustrating road DIY - as has been said countless times before - if you want to go faster go to a club. I don't have any clubs round here so I've been going solo with much valued support from this forum. Even so I spend about 90% time fixing and 10% flying. At the risk of stating the bleeding obvious these are the things I've learnt recently:

A bedroom or even a garage is just too damn small - even for the Twister Medevac and 47 - so you gotta get out.

Really really make sure the heli is set up well - particularly with swash plate square to flybar and blades tracking true - makes a big difference to stability. I don't think absolute pitch is so important at the beginning stage as long as you start off a bit negative.

Headspeed is really important - the little electrics need this for controllability - Ade and others pointed this out to me ages ago but I didn't understand how it was achieved - you have to get to know your throttle hold - ie you set the rotor speed up for ~75% full throttle and this is independent of collective - this makes it much easier for beginning to hover and motor to and fro - once you have done this you can explore throttle curve.

Don't even think about flying unless you have a rock steady tail - this means make sure the gyro is warmed up - switched on for 5 min prior to flying and make sure the heli is kept dead still unless the thing is intialised - you haven't got a cats chance in hell of flying the thing meaningfully if your tail is bucking around like a frog on a barbie!

Mercuriell, I think you mean Idle Up not Throttle Hold. Idle up is using a throttle curve to maintain drive no matter what collective input you give (i.e. what is used in inverted flight). Throttle Hold is what you use to auto rotate, i.e. it cuts throttle to idle (in glow terms) thus disengaging the clutch.

hello guys,, thanks for trying to help me, i think i need to have a good read and learn abit more about my heli, this is mt 2nd heli but my 1st one was basicly a toy it was so easy to fly, it was the blade runner 2......

but this heli is extremly hard for me. and all i basicly know is the controls it doesnt help that the manual i have is useless it doesnt tell me anything about my dragonfly 4 all it has is the controls and swashplate adjustment, main blades adjustment and flybar paddle adjustment....

im not even sure if its a fixed pitch or collective pitch.....

i dont have any model clubs where i live or any im able to go to so the bedroom and outside is the only place i can go.....

what do you mean by headspeed?
                    see what i mean i havnt got a clue....lol.....
do any of you guys know where i can get a good book or manual on learning about heli's and terms used in rc heli's.....
thanks for your help guys sorry im abit dumb,,,lol... dumb i mean new

Headspeed is just that - how fast the rotor head and main blades spin round - not possible to say how fast that is unless you buy a tacho but its in the region of 1500 - 2000 rpm. To get enough lift to get the bird off the ground depends on the combination of head speed and collecive pitch - more pitch and a lower headspeed or more headspeed and a lowerpitch will develop the same amount of lift within a certain envelope. However to keep the helo straight and give the gyro power to do its job the tail rotor has to spin at a minimum amount. So in an electric helo the head (or main rotor speed) has to spin up quickly and fast enough to allow tail control. Otherwise the tail skits around as the gyro tries to do the impossible.

Rob - point take about idle up and throttle hold - I just use the throttle hold switch on my Futaba 6 Tx and then set the speed enough to hover - a workaround as I haven't figured out how to program the throttle curve yet.

                        John.
