    Side on hovering

Do both sides equally if possible, you will prob have a stronger side naturally.

Very good point, I found myself good at left side in but bad at right side in! Make sure you give yourself plenty of space of course

I discussed this point with Trillian. I bet you are right-handed?

You will probably hover side on naturally with the heli biased to your left and right which is in effect tail in. Heli positioned to the left and nose left, heli positioned to the right and nose right. Try to bring the heli to a position right in front of you, this is a bit more difficult, you will find it easier to scribe an arc in front of you starting tail in and moving in an arc to the left and then the right then make the arc tighter.

Don't be too scared to let the heli go to say the left and then allow it to drift in a straight line backwards past you in effect becoming nose in, get the jitters and turn to tail in. This gradual exposure to the heli being nose in will help tremendously.

Yup, you bet alright! Do you know the reason? I thought maybe I got used to setting the Heli on the ground with my right hand and so got more used to viewing the heli from the left hand side when lifting of and hovering... never been sure though...

            Edit: good timing there

Agreed, side on hovering is good to go with next. Oddly enough I found that I went "round the clock" as I picked up Side-on (nose to the right) and then Nose-in before I was truly comfortable with Side-on (nose to the left). Oh and I'm a lefty...

It's also worth practising hovering at the four point 45 deg out from that because you're often not perfectly parallel or perfectly perpendicular when you stop flying about...

              Good luck

The way I was taught was with six amall flags on the ground then I had to hover eye level from one to the other, first tail in, then 45 degrees, then pushing a few degrees over the 45 each time. Do everything very slowly with small inputs so that if you do go wrong you can correct it quickly.
But the one thing to practice it the escape route if it all starts to go pear shape, get used to instinctivly swinging the tail back towards you as soon as things get shakey, it was drummed into me that getting the tail back should be my first move then make the corrections.

It worked for me I went from "newbie" to "nose in hovering" in about 5 lessons without a crash.

No, we didn't come up with a reason. TBH, it was Trillian did the same thing to me, said I bet you are left handed - wierd or what? (I mean the situation, not Trillian )

Put 3 markers on the ground (a bit of white painted plywood about 100mm square will do). Put one (the middle one) 5m directly in front of you, one 5m to the right of the centre and one 5m to the left.

Start with the heli in the middle and try to hold the hover tail-in at eye level directly over the centre marker. Once you are happy with this, keep the heli tail in and float it over to the right and hold the hover over the right hand marker, then back to the middle and hover, then over to the left and hover, then back to the middle etc etc.

Once you've got that licked and can keep the model over the markers (i.e. you're keeping it exactly on target, not just letting it wander around where it wants to go), then you can start from the middle and pick up to a hover, go over to the right hand marker, hover and land. Pick up, hover, back to the middle and land. Pick up, hover, over to the left and land etc etc etc.

All the above is tail in.

Once you can do all that, go back to the beginning and start trying the same routine side on. Don't forget to do it both ways round.

They key to these excercises is to practice all moves on both your hands and in all orientations so to hopefully stop you from becoming handed.

You can then move onto nose in and when the time comes, you can go through the routine again inverted, just without the landings ().

                        It takes discipline.

                        Good luck.

great thats what I wanted a plan how to do this , with the tip on bringing the tail in back asap if it starts to go wrong to get out of trouble aswell
many thanks hopefully the tips & guides will save me a few crashes .

The reason I asked for a guide/plan I was watching a bloke a newbie like me learning to hover he was flying around himself in circles . Only one way then land ,then around again the other way .
I thought this was not safe & a bad habit to get into ? I'm not in any club or anything like this at the moment but this can't be right ,I've allways have the helicopter in front of me at all times & I don't move from the spot I'm at flying I try to move the helicopter & not myself .
Any views on this would be great aswell

I tried that hovering in circles thing. Easier one way than other because of how the tail works. However the heli can get quite quick and you can get quite dizzy :-)

There's a site caled rc heli fun, or something similar and that has quite a nice lesson a day tutorial. Interestingly the last lesson is nose in hovering.
