  • please help a newbie

hi i hope someone can help me i have looked at the boards but can't find the info i need

I have been given a Hirobo Shuttle Z but i just can't seem to get the engine to work i have put fuel in checked the glow plugs, batteries, followed the manual on how to start it up etc etc but nothing

the engine is a os max sx it as a shaft start motor and i have a jp powertorque starter motor i put this in the slot at the top of the heli press the button and it doesn't even do anything doesn't spin or anything

i know the manual says the engine spins counterclockwise but the starter spins clockwise i have a ripmax power panel that i use and all leads are in the right sockets

i have also noticed that the arm that goes from the carb to the servo only moves a tiny bit (blink and you would miss it moving)

could someone please tell me what i'm doing wrong or what i need to do

    thank you for any recieved

Been a long time since I flew a Shuttle and mine had a belt start but I may be able to help.
There's a fair bit more info needed here tho.
First up you say that the starter doesnt turn, is that because the engine is stopping it? Does the starter spin when its not in the slot?
If it spins on it's own then try removing the glow plug and turning the engine over without compression, (from memory it should be turned over in a clockwise direction but you should be able to work it by looking at the blades and working backwards from there), so swap the leads round to suit.
If it still wont turn over then either the engine is siezed or the battery powering your starter is sh***ed. To determine which try turning the engine with the starter shaft by hand, if it wont turn over it's your engine, if it will it's your starter or battery.
The throttle servo should be moving the full 90 degrees, you may have to play around with the switches and settings on your transmitter to get this functioning properly.
But in all honesty as you're a complete novice and you havent worked all this out by yourself then I would recomend getting someone with a bit of knowledge to give it a look over before you attempt flying or even starting it up. Even little old Shuttle's are capable of dishing out a nasty bite!

Sounds as though your starter is running backwards but you realy do need to find some help at a club.

Well, it's one of those things based on perspective. If you look at the starter facing the starter shaft / fitting it will be turning clockwise because when it contacts the engine you're looking at from the back and then it is anti-clockwise, which is the direction the engine turns. This may seem obvious, but maybe he didn't think about that.

If the throttle arm barely moves then something is stuck and you don't want to try to start it that way, you need to know where the throttle is and you don't want it to be able to swing wide open on it's own.

The engine should be fairy easy to trun over by hand and feel smooth as it turns (there will be compression but should be no scraping or sticking).

It's hard to say much else with the info given. Definitely have someone with heli experince look at it.

Yeh, l was thinking it would just free wheel but a shuttle that age probabley doesn`t have a free wwheel anyway.
