  • Starting a nitro heli

Has anyone got any videos or advice on starting my OS 50 hyper? It is in my vision 50 airframe with a RJX pipe and I want to try it out. Can I use a cordless drill until I can fford a decent starter when I get paid at the end of the month?

    Thanks

    Wait get to a club...

if you do start it and f@ck it up you will really know about it, These machines with or without blades can cause a LOT of damage to you or anything nearby.

And it means you won't cook or damage the engine either

Okay will leave it alone thanks. By the way Mark I have got my transfer to Newark and will email Kesteven flying club asap about any vacancies for new members, I really hope there is room as it would be ideal for me to learn there as opposed to trying to teach myself! Look forward to seeing you soon.

about as much as cows can fly. Oh yes they do

OK, it -does- work. But it would be the last thing I'd want to mess around with when the engine is still new and a bit "difficult".
          The magic word: Dynatron...

Advice (disclaimer: blah blah blah): tested last week successfully with 30 % nitro.
          - The idle needle (small brass screw) is by default at 12 o'clock. Advance it one hour, i.e. set at 1 o'clock.
          - The main needle (large gray screw with ridges) is by default completely turned in, or at least too lean.
close the carburator, turn in the main needle all the way.
Open about 1 1/2 turns or slightly less.
          - The first start is usually "hot" - too much throttle. Don't mess with the radio, just block the exhaust tightly with the palm of your hand (don't try this once it's hot). The engine dies within a second or less.
If there's a silicon tube where the exhaust gases come out - so much the better. You can squeeze that shut even with a hot engine and it stops almost immediately.

I would never recommend to someone starting out in the hobby to use a cordless drill .. Unless it has different torque settings because theres always the chance that you might hydro lock and snap something in the process .. Spend the extra money and get a starter ... You can pick a cheap one up for about £20-£30 that will start upto a 50 size ...
