  • Battery Help

I am a long time Heli nut and had flown in the late 70's through the early 90's. Now my son has returned me to my madness. We have purchased a couple of new helicopters and are building them now. My son has a 7202h he has been flying planes with and will be using it. Me, I still am flying with my trusty JR Galaxy 8 (almost 20 years old and still going). As I will not be doing 3D I figure I will not need more. However, I have noticed many fliers are using 7.4v Lipos
and regulators. I am old school and have a few brand new 4.8V NiMh packs at 2300mah. I do not feel comfortable with Lipos yet and have had trouble with them in some foamies and a Honey Bee CP2. Will the newer Gyros (401's) and Digital tail rotor servos can I run the Nimh packs? If the regulator is going to cut the voltage down to 5 volts any way... Is there something I am missing?
I do not plan on running any Digital servos on my bird (Kinetic 50) as I will be flying mostly scale and basic aerobatics (rolls, loops, 540's). However my son will be flying 3D. He has a Raptor 50 Titan and 50 Hyper. He picked up fixed wing in an hour at 6 and is flying a Goldberg Super Chipmunk like there is no tomorrow. He hovered the Honey Bee in one Battery and in 2 days was doing circuits and stall turns. He has taken that little bird inverted. So I may need to upgrade his with the Lipo's, a regulator and governor at some time soon.

Heya and welcome to the forum ...You will not have n e problems with running nimh packs if thats what you are comfy with .. I still run 4.8 volt here as I got the packs so why spend more on lipos for my heli's .. plus the packs i use put my CG just right as well . I think as long as you keep an eye on the charge levels and charge between flights then theres no problems .. Enjoy and welcome back to the hobby
