  • Pitch adjustment

Hi, this is my first post - hopefully will have a lot more coming!

I have just bought for myself a Venom Night Ranger 3D Micro (what a name), my first rc helicopter. I have no practical experience as such, but a fairly good understanding of the physics involved.

I have been getting used to the controls today, literally sliding over the floor. I seem to be able to controlit to an extent, but when trying to hover - I can't. It seems as if there is no more power, although the rotor speeds up. I believe I have a problem with the pitch, it being at or near zero degrees. I have tried lengthening the pushrods between the flybar and rotors, increaing the pitch, however the heli somehow brings in back to zero again.

Is there anything you can suggest to resolve this? (I'm assuming the heli is of sound construction, and it is simply a matterof adjustment)

    Many thanks in advance,
    Brne

Hi there! Looks like a nice beginner chopper! What do you mean the heli seems to bring it back to zero pitch again? With the motor diconnected are you getting any pitch movement when you waggle the throttle stick up n down? Does it not go more than zero pitch or?

Thanks for your reply! Thanks, I decided to go for this, despite being labelled intermediate/advanced, seemed better quality than the cx2's and more fun in the long run.

Trying with the motor disconnected, I do get positive pitch. When I say the helicopter seems to change the pitch, I mean that after adjusting the pitch when switched off, switching on the heli and radio, the heli seems to adjust the pitch back to zero (perhaps during the gyro startup time). But as seen with the last try, the pitch does change when the motor is disconnected.

      Thanks again for your response,
      Brne

hi brne and welcome to heliaddicts.

there is a round dial (pitch trim) on the top left of the tx (transmitter) if you turn it clockwise you should get more pitch. i would disconnect the motor again and check if it does give you more pitch and how much.

you need to check that you havent made the blade tracking go out of track when you adjusted them top links in the head. i think the smallest links at the top of the head are to adjust blade tracking.

to set the pitch mechanicly you need to raise or lower the swash plate by adjusting the rods that come from the servos to the swash plate and the longer rods from the swash plate to the head. this takes some fiddling about and you need to do this with the motor unplugged and you need to keep testing the ammount of pitch and that nothing is binding when at top and bottem stick. you will need a pitch gauge to put on the blades to see the actual amount of pitch at middle, top and bottem.

there is also a 3d switch that you shouldnt touch yet as this will give the heli 100% power at any part of the throttle/pitch stick (even at the lowest stick position you will have 100% power)

where abouts in the uk are you? best thing would probably be to get some1 to look over it and show you how to set it up.

our pitch settings are -11 at bottem stick / 0 at middle / +11 at top (3d setting).
im not sure what the pitch ammounts should be for a beginner.

        cheers

          Dear Mattydread,

Thanks for your informative response. As for the pitch control dial, I can't see any change in blade pitch when the motors have been disconnected. I can't say if it is a problem with the heli or my not knowing what to look for.

As you have mentioned, so far I have been adjusting the links by the blades, I'll have a go with the servo links - could you provide some more info how to do this? I'm concerned about irretrievably mucking up the settings!

As for the 3d mode, I've had a go when holding it - powerful stuff! Look forward to mastering it!

As for my whereabouts, I'm in Edinburgh. One other question: ehat would you recommend to learn how to fly: book, lessons, club? I was planning on teaching myself with advice from these fora of course!

Thanks for all your advice so far - I really apreciate your help!
