  • forward flight problems ?

Hi., Having trouble with forward flight and turns. Got hovering just about sorted, still need sim practice for nose in, so thought i would try some forward flight/turns. I think my problem is keeping momentum with forward and correct input cyclic/yaw for turns. Just want to make sure i,m not missing something? Before practice wrong method! I have no one to fly with down here (my club all planks). Finished running heli in yesterday and did first hover for real (not sim) bit butt clenching but awesome ! Want to be well practiced on sim while weather crap so ready for the real deal. Any tips/hints appreciated. Richard

Make sure you use the rudder when trying to turn

Do you fly planes as well ?? .. If you do little bit of advice .. In FF they do actually fly alot like a plane .. albeit you need to use the rudder alot more .. I actually fly my planes better since using a heli lol....

          Hi
Have you checked you center of gravity?
once they are setup nicely you only normaly only need to give them the odd nudge of forward to get them moveing.

Hi.,Yes i do fly planes, although i have stayed away whilst trying to
fly heli,s. Apart from yesterdays hover all my heli flying is on the sim. I just dont seem to be able to control the forward speed and turns that well, i guess its more practice untill it comes together. Thanks for input guys. richard

They fly like scale planes where you need to use rudder to turn, so fly it like a scale plane

unlike most trainer/aerobatic planes they turn without rudder

On Phoenix, the gyro mode and tail fin size make a lot of difference to FF.

With the gyro in rate mode, the heli seems to fly like a plane (and actually points where it's going).

In HH mode it corners like a hovercraft...

I could do FF in rate mode ages before HH.

I cracked it by getting the heli moving then adding bank and as the others have suggested steer the tail round with the rudder. If you're loosing speed then go against your fixed wing experience and slightly push the nose down and the add collective to maintain the height. Don't be tempted to fall back into dragging the nose around with the elevator, the move needs to be carefully co-ordinated. Only use a touch of elevator in the turns and you'll preserve the momentum.

It's all too easy to back off with elevator and stall forward speed or the opposite where the speed builds up and it gets away from you, remember L.A.F.T lead with aileron follow with tail. I would suggest however cracking hovering with the real thing before progressing to forward flight. Don't worry so much about nose in but definitely side on both directions progressing to lazy 8's before circuits and forward flight. Happy flying

It's a constant height, constant speed side on figure 8.
