  • Twister Skylift V2 - help replacing rotor hub

    Hi everyone,

    Brill forum! !!

I need some help replacing the front rotor hub on my Skylift. (plastic pins snapped that hold the blades)

I have the replacment part, but can't figure out how to remove the old one.

I can take out the grub screws that allow it free on the shaft, but then the upper hub is in the way.

How do I get around this? Does the top hub pull off? Or do I need to remove the inner shaft to get the lower rotor hub off?

    Cheers !!

    Tris

think you have to take the inner shaft out with the main gear you mite have to remove whats under it then the lower/outer shaft gear will come off by undoing the grub screw then the outer shaft will come out. had a hawk for a short while and think the set up is the same. if im wrong please dont sue.

I think you are right - that's the conclusion I've come to as I'm examining it now.

The problem is that I can't undo the flipping screws holding the gear to the inner shaft !!

      Arrrggh

Having withdrawl symtoms being grounded like this

Any tips on unscrewing tiny screws with tiny screw drivers????

My hands are killing me trying to undo them! Lol

I use a small pair of molegrips on the screwdriver shaft. Providing the screwdriver is the right size, it will give you more leverage.

By the way, welcome to the best heli forum on the net!

          Nice one !!

          I shall try that.

The screwdriver is an exact fit - it stick well into the screw and my palm ends up rotating around the screwdriver !

And thanks for the welcome - it's excellent here !!!

          Cheers

Well, I replaced the hub - FINALLY !!! Yay.

Just did a test flight and the thing just wobbled like hell and just as she became light flipped on the side.

I held it in my hand and throttled up and it was so wobbly.

            I simply can't use it now !!!!

            Soooooo gutted.

What shall I do? Only had it a week.

It flew beautifully the other day, then I caught the blade and damaged the hub, now it's a wobbly mess.

Do you think the shaft is now bent??

Almost certainly. You need to get the shafts out and roll them on a piece of glass. One or both will probably be bent. I fly a Lama Dauphin co-ax, and I always have a spare set of shafts to hand

When you get used to it, you can overhaul the whole thing in a few minutes.

              Good Luck.

Nice one Brian, I'll buy some shafts tonight.

Flipping 'eck can't believe I've screwed it up so much already

                Lol.

                Anyway, thanks guys

No worries, Tris. A co-ax is like the big CP helis in some respects - fly it, crash it, hammer credit card, fix it, fly it.......

ON the subject of that lower rotor hub, as you soon may find, they break real easy. I've found a way of repairing them. I drill a tiny pilot hole dead centre though the bit where the shaft has broken off, very square, then follow it up with a drill out of my metric drill set, which drills a hole EXACTLY the same diameter as a cotton wool bud's plastic shaft. I then glue the shaft in place, pass a drill down the rotor hub after the glue has gone off, and finish by dremellinig the cotton wool shaft stubs down to the right length.

Amazinigly enough it Worked a treat, and was quicker than blowing a fiver on the card, and waiting a couple of days for a new part...
I Fly: Vectron Blackhawk, Silverlit X-UFO, Twister Skylift, Walkera 5g6/micro-x, syma Mosquito, and when I stop breaking the Skylift and the micro-x I might even give my Falcon 3d/mini pred a go...
                    I Fix: Anything and everything.
I break: The skylift, always the bl**dy skylift! and occasionally the micro-x, because that tail is made of flash dried spider webs and the motor pinions are *alledgedly* made out of dried monkey snot.

Well I'm STILL GROUNDED !!!!! ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

I bought a new inner shaft, outer shaft and flybar.

I took it to my hobby shop for them to repair as they specialise in Twisters and the owner has a Skylift.

He fitted the outer shaft as that was the one at fault. He took it to a short hover to test and was ok.

I took it home - took it for a short hover, then a little more and WHAM!!!

The whole thing did a wobbler as before and hit the deck. The blades up front collided somehow and smashed one of the blades.

The Model shop fitted new JP blades and it's those that smashed - they were alot more flexible and thinner than the other "stock" blades that came with the skylift. is this now the problem???

The model shop mentioned that all the screws were superglued in and they shouldn't have been !! - That's why I had such a job replacing the stupid hub.

I just can't believe it. I haven't been able to fly properly yet due to all this carp.

Should I send it back to the model shop I bought it from for a replacement??? This sucks big time.

Ok, I've done a bit of investigating.

Took the rotors off and ran the shafts at low RPM to see if they were bent.

But they were running perfectly straight.

The rear fly bar was not straight so I straightened that.

BUUUT - the new blades that were put on were coded as "B3" whereas my original blades were coded as "B4". I think this is the difference in thickness!!

When they spin up, they are flexing noticeably upwards and therefore catching on the upper rotors!!

So hopefully the blades I just ordered off eBay will be correct. They were 100% the same code as in the manual (6601650 for upper and 6601660 for lower) - so fingers crossed this will get me back in the air.

Otherwise I'm going to the air strip to fly my plane instead this weekend!!

Tris, sorry, only just seen this. Although this is the best forum on the net, most people on here fly the bigger CP helis. You might get a better response on heliguy: -

If you post on those, you may get more response. I'm sorry, but I have a Lama, so I don't know much about your heli.

                            Hope this helps.

                              Thanks Brian.

                              I'll check those out.

                              But I've found my problem.

Even though the shafts were bent previously - the flybar was also slightly out of shape.

I put that right and the Heli seems fine again.

                              Cheers!
