  • Do Brushless Run Hotter?

Hi, I've just changed my Walkera 4-3 to brushless using the brushless upgrade kit from chinesejade.

It seems much more stable and has a easier to find centre of gravity IMO, also sounds a lot better without the whine it had before.
The only concern I've got is that the motors get hotter with 1 battery pack than the previous brushed ones, is this right? The tail motor which is also brushless gets almost too hot to touch?

I haven't done anything wrong have I? Would be V. grateful for an experienced reply.. Thanks

Make sure that the motor pinion isnt too close to the main gear, there should be some space between the gears. If the motor is too close to the gear it will bind up and the motor will get hot.

With my brushless 4#3B the main motor gets very slightly warm to touch, however the tail gets quite hot.
If your main motor is hot then something is wrong.

Does it feel like you have more power than before?

it is mainly the tail that gets hotter than before so if yours is doing the same I feel a lot better knowing that. The pinion is really smooth on the main motor.
I think its got a fair bit more power, It really sounds better too . I'm really pleased with it. Think its due to adding the esc up towards the nose but its a lot better balanced.

Time your next flight, if your getting 8 minutes or more then I think everything is ok.

On the tail, make sure you lubricate the bearings, WD40 is what im using.
Also make sure that the tail rotor isnt too tight on the shaft, there should be a little bit of movement. If its too tight the motor will overheat.

I think you have to plug the new ESC into the existing receiver.

I was reading on rcgroups and they said that there was a different motor avalable for 4g3 and 43b that will work with the walkera ESC but is lighter and more powerfull.
I cant find the exact link but it might be worth checking it out before you buy the walkera motor.

in the past i have seen guys with tiny little heat sinks cliped on the tail motors.

The stock brushless motors on 43b and 43g's are inrunner motors so even tho they are brushless they still get a bit warm to the touch, if you cut a small hole in the 43g canopy you'll get a bit more air through which will help cool it. Terence at Chinese Jade has a few motors that you can just plug in to the existing receiver which are lighter and slightly more powerful, try to avoid the walkera brushless tail model as the extra weight of the 2nd esc sucks a lot of power even with the 500mah lipos and the motors aren't too durable or consistently built.
