  • LAMA V-4. Been there, done that...

I wore my V-4 out. But this took a LOT of flying.

During all of this flying I experimented and modified her quite a bit and my first mod was the Fly-Bar on top. A buddy of mine had shortened his and I liked the way she flew and I wanted the same effect, she became a LOT more sensitive - so don’t do this until you have some experience. Instead of cutting it down like he did I removed the weights and made my own out of fine solid-core soldering wire. I weighed the weights that came with it and made my weight about half of that, sorry, forgot what that weight was. But it had the same effect as my buddies cut-down Fly-Bar. I also developed a method of, ‘Super-Balancing,’ it. This is VERY important. If you are interested let me know.

The next was using a rotary cutter-drill in my Hi-speed Dremmel to make two holes in the canopy opposite the pot screws on the 4 in 1. Ideally you ought to be able to set your machine up using the trim on your Tx, but real life doesn’t work that way and even if you do have a good set-up, this can migrate beyond what your trim levers can achieve. So these two holes let you adjust your GAIN and PROPORTIONAL.

    Anyway, here’s some hints:

HINT 1: Take lots of pictures of your machine, the innards, linkages and all the fiddly bits, this will be very useful if/when you have to do rebuilds or repairs.

HINT 2: Let your battery cool for at least 20 minutes before recharging, if you charge when hot you can damage your battery!

HINT 3: My hand-book says to run the battery flat a few times. NONSENSE! This was OK for NiCad’s but NOT for LiPo’s. The old batteries had a, ‘memory,’ but LiPo’s do not. Fly until you need a lot of throttle to stay in the air – then land – before you accidentally land on that ugly vase your granny gave you last Christmas!

No, she doesn’t do aerobatics and no I don’t break any speed records, but she is a real hoot to fly and is great for getting kids and newbies addicted to this sport. Anyway, I LOVE this little beast!

If anyone has any questions I’ll be glad to give it a shot.

Meanwhile I have a Graupner XXL e-powered glider coming and I can’t wait to try her out. I have the use of a big farm at the end of the road that’s owned by the buddy I mentioned earlier. He’s a guy who believes in Barbeques and cold beer!

By the way, I live in the boonies on the island of Newfoundland, Canada so If any of you guys get out here give me a call. I’m the only Kfir in the whole of Canada so you’ll be able to find me in the book. Beer, barbeques and flying, that’s the offer!

Any V-3 or 4 questions? Let me have them!

Cheers – and keep em flying! Hairball.
