  • Glass Fibre blade warping

I was flying myRaptor 50 v2 friday evening and all was well and running a head speed of around 1600rpm. Next day i loaded up the car early for a days flying but was delayed until the afternoon, it was a bit warm in my car! Flew my heli and blade tracking was out, I adjusted the pitch rods and all was ok again.

I flew again on sunday in the afternoon with no probs, got home left heli in the warm car and managed to get out for an evening flight but found the tracking to be out again! Decided not to fly anymore and investigate the rotor head, I took it all apart, Feathering spindle was dead straight, screws secure, all rod were straight , The head seems perfect with no problems. Blades are balenced and didnt appear warped.

Any ideas why guys? Im using jp glass blades and they have worked v well since my crash last july. Could it be the recent change in weather and blades warping in the car?

    any help appreciated
    cheers

    Andy

the JPs are quite thin and flexible compared to othes on the market so it wouldnt supprise me if they did warp.

I have seen glass fibre blades particularly warp, actually one instance was with a gasser model, the pilot wasnt aware of the problem with the blades, as he increased the throttle more and more to get the model up into the hover. In the end the model never left the ground, as the top and bottom halfs of one of the blades separated causing the lead balancing weight inside to fly out like a bullet out of a gun, it managed to find its way to my leg even while I was stood some 40 or so foot away at the time!

It just managed to pierce the skin, even through a pair of jeans and I was soar for a couple of weeks afterwards. This and one or two other similar instances is why you will never find me in anything other than a pair of jeans and hiking boots at the field no matter what the weather is doing!

        Cheers,
        Pete.

wow...Pete, surely there must have been some previous damage to the blade for this to happen???

            Ade,

None that I am aware of, as the model was almost new and was actually being hovered for the second time when this happened. The bonding between the top and bottom halfs of the blade simply let go. It was a very hot day then, so it was put down to warping. As the blades were supplied with the airframe kit, this problem was reported to the distributor at the time but nothing was ever said or done about it.

            Cheers,
            Pete.

sounds like a dodgy set of blades to me.
