  • Newbie - Indoor vs Outdoor

    Hello all,

I've just signed up to RCHeliAddicts today! I got a Blade CX2 at Christmas, and am LOVING IT!!!

    I had a few questions..

Firstly - can anyone explain (or direct me to a posting) what the main difference is between indoor and outdoor heli's?
I used to think it was mainly the weight meant that wind didn't have as much impact, but the current outdoor helis can be very light.
so then I thought maybe there are more gyros and electrics that counteract the wind?!
Just curious to know what would stop a Blade 400 from being sent haywire like my CX2 does when I try taking it outdoors!

Also - in a few months when I've mastered my CX2, I'm keen on stepping up to an outdoor model... so I was wondering if anyone can suggest a very cheap place to find a good Sim? Ebay? 2nd Hand?
Also, will my CX2's transmitter work with SIMs, or will I have to spend more on another one?

    Thanks everyone!!

(and sorry... I'm sure similar questions are asked very often!)

depends how strong the wind is pal they all go haywire in the wind but gyro helis are a bit more stable

Indoors tend to be the smaller machines the contra's cannot handle wind for example they just get blown about and crash which is fine with me

450 size are mostly used indoors but they can handle winds of 8-10mph winds if kitted out right.

why doesn't the 450 suffer like contras its because it has one set of blades spinning a lot faster. wind gets hold of a contra it just pushs it along the blades are fixed pitch where as the 450's have a Collective pitch and you have far more control over the blades and head speed etc etc.

Outdoors mostly Nitro or larger electric (T-rex 500 size and up)

And yes, the LP5DSM will work with Phoenix, but I find the DX6i is better.

                Welcome to the forum!

Just in case some of the other posts don't make sense, I'll fill in a few blanks. My apologies if you already know this!!

The blades of contra rotating twin blade helis like the CX2 are fixed to a positive pitch angle, so the lift depends on the speed of the blades and the amount of air passing over them. This is OK for indoors as there is zero wind even though you have to lower the speed of the motor to descend.

Outdoors in wind its a nightmare because the positive pitch on the blades will make it climb if the blades are spinning at almost any speed which makes descending a bit tricky to say the least.

On a collective-pitch model you can vary the pitch of both blades simultaneously to either positive pitch (to climb) or negative pitch (to descend). This allows the blades to spin at a constant rate improving stability and allowing descent in windy conditions.

I fly my Blade 400 in reasonable winds, although the bigger and heavier the heli, the less they will be affected by wind.

Hope this helps, and anyone feel free to pitch in if I've got it a bit wrong!!!

Thanks Everyone.... expecially HeliTV... that all makes sense... but it has also scared me!!

So on my Blade CX2 I use the left stick for throttle to ascend and descend... so for a collective pitch, would I use the throttle (left stick) just for rotor speed? if so, how do you control the pitch for ascending??

No no, the left stick will control both throttle and blade pitch.

Welcome to the forum mate, I'm pleased your CX2 is offering much enjoyment, and so may it continue.

Always remember this hobby is one continues long learning curve, so don't worry about asking possible questions that have been mentioned before, everyone has to start somewhere.

As said, the controller with your CX2 will work fine with Phoenix, and if you seriously wish to take your hobby to the next level you want to make that your next purchase.

                        Good luck.

I think he just had a mismatch of trying to explain that left throttle powers up and lifts, and the right directs what direction she flys.
