  • Radio Gear Installation Advice Needed

    Hi All,

    Slow progress putting my Evo together but I've now started putting the radio gear in and I've got a few issues that I'd appreciate assistance with.

    1. Does the orientation of my GY401 gyro matter ? What I mean is, looking down the heli from the front should it's cable come out from the 12, 3, 6 or 9 o'clock position ? I can't find any reference regarding it's orientation in the Futaba instructions ?

    2. I've installed my servos using the rubber mounts and metal grommets. How tight should I screw them to the mount ? I've put the servo plates on the pitch servo, as instructed in the manual. Is it beneficial to use plates AND rubber mounts on ALL servos ?

    3. Looking at installing the control rods, the user manual states that one of the control rods needs to be attached 9.5mm from the centre of the servo horn. I don't have a servo horn with a hole 9.5mm from the centre. Does this matter ? I do have holes at 8 & 11mm. Is it better to go slightly smaller or slightly larger ?

    Can't wait to get this bird in the air. Guys at the club will help me with the setup. Till then, my trusty Lama is keeping me entertained in the lounge - great little heli.

    mount the gyro any direction you want. Best place on the sceadu is ontop of the aileron servo up front.

    go for the 11mm. I had to go out a bit further to get full travel of the swash plate.

      Why put the gyro in the front when there's a dedicated mounting plate for it just behind the main shaft?

        better protected from the elements. Also i found back there that the gyro tape didnt last long. I put this down to hanger rash.

          Ade, I'd put it down to too much backwards flying :lol:

          Alway use the rubber grommets and eyelets, they are designed to isolate the servos from too much vibration. The rim of the eyelets should be on the opposite side to were the screw heads will go, sounds illogical, but true. The idea is that the screw head is gently tightened down against eyelets, stopping the rubber grommet from being squeezed too much, unless you really gorilla the screws

          The dimension of the servo horn isn't too important initially, just get them as near as possible. Later, as your skill level progressed, you'll be able to get them sorted properly, and understand how and why

          One point though, if you have a eCCPM version of the Skidoo, all three servo horns should be of equal length, otherwise you might get some unwanted interactions.

          Why does it always persist down at weekends ?

            If you use the plain servo discs, you can drill the holes exactly where it says in the instructions, including the slight angle offsets.

              by using the "next horn round" on the servo arms you can get it 90degs that way too. no 2 horns are the same on each arm.

              i think that just about makes sense!!

                I assume that if I were to position the gyro infront of the rotor head, instead of behind it, then I would need to reverse the gyro (?????).

                  Nope, turn it up-sidedown and you might.

                    The gyro detects clockwise and anticlockwise rotation about one axis, so it can be placed anywhere within the body of the heli with no need to reverse anything. Nearer the mainshaft is better though if possible - closer to the axis of rotation of the airframe.

                    The Sciddly-Doo push-pull set up requires servo disc output positions that are not quite 180 degrees apart if you want to be really accurate - more like 185 degrees. I had mine set at 180 degrees with normal star type horns for ages until recently when I changed the servos and went for the plain discs which allowed me to get exactly the right distance from the centre, and the correct angles.

                    Can't say that I really noticed any difference!!!!

                    :roll:

                          What they should be called.....

                          Sceadu -> Sciddly-Doo
                          Shuttle -> Scuttle

                          Much better representation of how they perform I think.
