  • Alternative servo for the blade 400

Hi this is only my second post and a newdie but can some one recommend some alternative servos with metal gears for the blade 400, I have had to replace one or two gears in the two aileron servos four times and replace the tail servo with a new one as this one seized, but don’t want to break the bank! Slowly getting better last three outing and six batteries I bent the fly bar and striped one gear in one servo, and that was today and it was a bit windy,
Only had it since Christmas and at 51! don’t think iam doing too bad teaching my self.
    Cheers Chris

Well done grandad, having taken this up 4 months ago as a 50 year old juvenille you appear to be doing better than me. The Hitec HS65MG's appear to be by far the most popular servo upgrade on the Blade 400 nad with the odd exception of a couple of Futaba's I've used Hitec's in every RC toy that I've had with no problems.

        Nik.

        Before you ask:

        About 2 miles
        Over £500
        Very difficult
        Over 80mph
NO, you can't have a go

That was the last three outings the first two weeks wasn’t so good this is what I broke, 4 sets of main blades, 2 sets of blade grips, 3 feathering shafts, 1 main shaft, 1 under carriage, 1 tail fin, and a cracked canopy, and that’s with training gear on, or and the servos. I’ve now got a T-Rex 450 fiberglass canopy from Fast Lads @ £7.99 you just have to drill two holes for the grommets. I rang Fast lad in Barnsley and they recommended the same servos Hitec HS65MG's so I will go for those. I have just got a Blade MCX bind and fly for the house and its great fun (haven’t broke that yet) Cheers guys

Hi Chris and welcome to the forum (and the happy band of Blade 400 flyers!)

Your experiences at the start are similar to mine - my first flight lasted 10 seconds - and I had similar servo gear problems. I resisted the urge to upgrade as my thoughts were that in a crash something will break so I'd rather it was a £2 gear set for a servo rather than the servo motor. My tail servo failed too and I replaced it with a J Perkins one which has been fine. I know some people recommend the upgrade, but personally, I would rather save the money for the next heli, but I guess its horses for courses!

From a very shaky start, I can now fly reasonable 8's (after 4 months) and the Blade is beginning to reward to effort put in learning to fly it. I still class myself as a newbie as I know I have much to learn!

If you haven't already, I would thoroughly recommend a simulator (probably Phoenix) as it allows you to try so many things without risking a crash.

Anyhow, if you have any questions, there's loads of B400 flyers here (most of whom are far better qualified to help than I am!), so post any questions up!

            All the best

Sounds like you are doing OK

As far as the mCX goes they are quite hard to break but they do break in the end and that is normally down to being completely stupid rather than Newbie type mistakes believe me. Took me a good while to break mine but I've now managed it 3 times and it's always the same bit of unobtainium that breaks

Thanks Graham I would love a sim but I have an iMac G5 the one before Intel so I cant run windows, and I would have to buy a PC as well as the sim. When you buy the heli they should tell you about the bankruptcy warning ant the addiction,

I know this will come back to bite me in the backside but so far apart from one crash where I did two servo's, which I replaced with JP one's, these are the only one's I've broken.

Yes that is a shame. I've just put Vista on my iMac ready for Phoenix at the end of the month. (Pay Day)

I had good luck ordering HS 65MG servos from PhoenixMP

                      http://www.phoenixmp.com/acatalog/Hi...ue_Servos.html

Ordering 2 or more they are a bit cheaper than most places.
                      Every little helps!
