  • Newbie - Which sevos & rx etc.

    Hi All
Apologies if this should be in the radio bit.
I've recently bought a FF7 tx on it's own for use with reflex. After lots of evenings practising on the PC and with my Honey Bee FP (and talking to the wise ones on here), I am looking at possibility of getting a 30. Probably a Raptor sounds like my best bet after what I have read.
Question is, I have no rx, crystals, servos or gyro etc. Can anyone recommend a suitable collection of goodies that will suit a beginner and still be OK when I get a little better?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Leebert

You are in the same situation I was a little while back. I had a FF7 and reflex whilst saving a few 's to get my Raptor 30 in the air. I bought a Raptor and built that then realised it would be better to get a sim and practice first.

Anyway after a lot of thought I bought the following servos
    1x 9254 for tail
    1x 3152 for collective
    3x 3001 for elevator/aileron/throttle

I also went for a Futaba GY401 gyro as I heard nothing but praise for the 401/9254 set up. As for the receiver I bought a R138DF, it is an 8 channel receiver and I have something plugged in to all eight channels.

Just finally bought all my starting gear so showed be heading along to local club later this month.

As I run with JR and have only the standard servo's that came with my 2610 on all controls but the tail then I can't really advise but I have invested in a 9254 for the tail & a 401 gyro so like brashhighlander said this is certainly a very good move and money well spent.

As for a Tx again I run with a JR R700 but I would think that again as brash points out the Futaba 138DF PPM 8Ch Rx would be fine.

      Cheers & all the best.

brashhighlander's spec is good but if you can afford it:

        3152 on collective/aileron/elevator/throttle
        PCM reciever.

3152 are relatively cheap and very good servos for the money. Having one on the throttle means that a governor such as the rev-lock can be run in DS mode which improves the response.

Main reason for PCM is that it gives you a Failsafe. if somebody switches on their TX on your frequency it will just go into failsafe which means its not going to fly off or have power on if it goes into the pits. It also has better noise rejection than PPM.

To back up Ade on the PCM receiver advice. From experience, most clubs will insist that you enable at least the throttle in fail safe, hence the requirement for a PCM rx. If you are spending 300+ on a model why put a 35.00 FM rx in?

            Thanks for the responses guys
I'll look into the kit at the Sandown show and see if I can get myself a deal!
