Running Before I can walk

Hi there,

Bit of a saga really wife bought me a little SYM heli for xmas (3ch) which I have really enjoyed around the house, so last week I am browsing e-bay for something a bit better quality and I lose my head and buy a full petrol powered kit.

So I go and pick it up, "hmm its a bit bigger than I thought", the seller runs through how to start it and leave happy. On the drive home while trying to work out how hide it/justify it to the wife it occurs to me to join a club, I quickly forget this.

The next day while she is out I set it out in the garden and start it up. "hmmm its quite noisy".

By luck or chance I manage to get it up in a hover about three feet off the ground.

The dog looks at me with some concern.

Its at this point I realise that i have no real idea what I am doing and that this thing could be deadly. I let it down and switch it off.

Great intro.

I thought I was rushing in by getting a blade 400, but I think you may have driven into it at 150mph.

but get the sim and get to grips with it, maybe buy a 6 channel elec as well.

but I think flying in your back garden with a petrol may be a bit of a bad idea, them blades shift and I don't think there very dog friendly.

but welcome to the ever expanding club, you will get lots of great advice on this site as I have.

Glad to see you've got the right idea - joining a club will be the best thing you could do (alongside getting a sim! )

My first heli was a Raptor 30 and I remember it being very intimidating (and me butt clenching a lot at the thought of all that money being inches from a crash! )

It gets easier, honest!

Welcome. You've done brilliantly. Takes most people a while to get them down in one piece. Bigger is easier with helis. Realising that you don't know what your doing usually costs a bit as well.

Hirobo shuttle with a ton of spares and all the running kit.

I will be putting it away for a while, may pick up a six channel electric at the shop tomorrow when I pick up the sim

Just to clarify, all I did was roll the throttle off, no skill required, the training balls probably saved it.

Quick question, do all of the small electrics run the contra rotor setup? Is there a model with just the two blade setup?

Love your intro!!!!... there is something about helis that makes grown men naughty teenagers again!!... love it.

You have all the right ideas. Maybe go for a trex 450 or blade 400 if funds allow or as most people advise a contra machine like a cx2 which will help you learn controls and fly indoors without killing the dog!!

As for sims.... we like phoenix. Check to see what transmitter you have and your local HS will set you up with the required adaptor lead etc.

Forget the contras go for it. Join a club and take advantage of the help and egging on you get. The information and assistance is second to none of people who've done the same. Similar story to yours started it in the garden s### meself and the rest you can guess. Forget the electric the shuttle is a great heli.

If your serious about joining a club you may want to put off buying a small electric and put the money to lessons flying your shuttle. The nitro will be far more stable and give you more 'thumb time' than a 450 or similar, then get something small and lively once you've got the hang of the Shuttle.

Agreed, the shuttle is a lot easier to fly than any 6ch electric. The contras are great for learning the basics but that's something the sim will do admirably too.

You've come into the hobby the way thousands of people have done over the years, the shuttle has probably taught more people to fly than any other heli, enjoy and welcome to the madhouse...
