hi there everyone, ok i understand tachometers and headspeed ect... but what i dont understand is unless the heli is off the ground how will you get a reading with full idel up, i dont fancy lossing my arm, maybe you weight the skids to the floor, the otherthing is an onboard tacho but i dont fancy getting my head that close,

also for my tt 39 pro engine to run ok i need to richen the high end needle 8 times out!!!!! i havn't try'd to richen the low end yet, i think the low end is to lean, it aint due to underpressured tanks or worn out clunk/fuel lines
    ideas anyone

    and last but not least
i have a fail safe in my spares box, im often scared not that my heli will crash but more that it will go up and up and up ( u get the picture ) and eventualy end up hurting someone outside of my flying area, now i have got a led volt monitor, but may if i put a fail safe on it and set it to idle close it would just drop to the floor, i'd rather smach it to bits then it fly off and kill someone

as always thanks in advance for your good advice

    Hi
Tachos.. get one you can use at range and then you hover the Heli and someone then takes the headspeed reading. thats how we do it. Were
a good 16-20ft back from the model were useing the tacho on.

Failsafes we have got to have these put onto our models by june the
1st for saftey reasons. Now the failsafe once set will ONLY come on when
the battery pack voltage gets low or loses radio signal then it just
cuts the throttle. We all have LED monitors but there only a guide not
to be taken as the gospal. As a cell could be on its way out etc..

Anyway if it did close the throttle you may be able to still save a heli in the free fall... Its call an auto and something we all need to learn one day!

We used to do it by fixing a plane tacho to a screwdriver with a rubber band and then poking it in the ground and hoverring the heli over it!

Now we've got one of those remote tachos where you can follow the heli around the sky and through it's manouvers - much better.

However, simple answer is to get one of the head speed locking devices - the CSM one is only about 40 from Inwoods.

        Hi,

I use an 'X-Treme Optical' tacho and although it states upto 2400 rpm they will actually go to 2800 rpm. I know this is correct as it was purchased to set the head speed on my x400 and have since used it on my rappy at a much slower speed obviously. Midland helicopters sell em but they aint cheap at around 55 but they are simple to use, just look thru the little window while pointing at the head and adjust using the up or down buttons until the blades appear to stop - this is you head speed. easy 8)

You could also check out the following site for one that mounts on the heli itself and is clearly visable. h**p://www.pacelink.co.uk/icrotospeed.htm

        Cheers.

          Or

You can use a Bicycle speedometer mounted directly on the Heli

some of them have a max speed memory so after flying around you can land and then look at the reading

Some also have an average reading as well

If you get one with a large enough LCD you should be able to read it directly off the heli in the hover

There are many threads on various forums with quite clear details on exactly how to do this

The main beneift is that its a hole lot cheaper than a Tacho designed for use with a Model heli i belive you can get a half decent Bicycle speedo with the features stated above for between 15 and 25 quid which is much more affordable

do a search on some of the other main forums and you should find the info

          Hope this helps

            Disc,
Is that right, we all have to have failsafes installed by June the 1st? It's the first Ive heard of this.

dont use a tacho no need. CSM rev-lock lets you set the speed on it. then it governs the speed for you.

              no tacho, no worries.

Having seen the reliability of failsafes fitted to cars, there is no way I'd put one in a heli 8O

That was sort of what I was getting at, I'd rather go PCM and do it properly than fit a failsafe to the throttle
