helis have some sort of cool factor to them that planes dont. So they arent quite so nerdy as other parts of the sport. Especially once they see what they can do compared to the big ones.
but... i am affraid its still a nerdy sport

My missis has told all her work mates that ive turned into some sort of geeky-nerdoid.
She's told them that ive even bought a hoodie with the club logo on(they dont exist), and if everone at the club stands with their backs to you, you cant tell who's who. 8O
Of coarse she didnt tell me this until after i'd done the ironing for her on mothers day,(cow) :?
I can see where the nerdy thing comes from though, but if these non nerdy people actually saw a heli flying first hand, i think they would circome to our geeky ways,
In fact, wooohhhh dudes, we could take over the world!!!!!! invite your friends round to see your heli flying in order to geekify them, then get the newly geeked geeks to invite their friends round
and so on,and so on, before you know it, everyone on the planet will be a geekoid living in places like Nerdingham and Dorkshire    which ,when it boils down to it meens we'll all seem normal...

Model flying has the reputation and it really is no suprise when you look at the sorry excuse of a publication the BMFA sent out the other day, I felt ashamed that some of my money contributed towards it.
We're put in the same boat as the rest of the model flyers in the same way that if I went to a football match in the 80's then I'd be a hooligan, all Americans are overweight, all skydivers are druggies and all BMW drivers are tossers.
Just get on and enjoy what you do and forget what others think.Clones are bad
.... that includes Align ones

I wondered if it was just me being a printer that the BMFA publication is so poor. I wouldn't let that out my door is so shockingly badly printed it's unreal. We print magazines on a regular basis and the BMFA's would be a so easy for us to do. Half tempted to ring them now.....Cheers

I have been making and flying model planes since I was 11 - now 53. At 16 I even competed in the British Nationals in the Control line team race - both 1/2 A and FAI - and in all that time I have never had any real respect from friends about my hobby of making 'toy' planes :?
I have found that to be a REAL man with a REAL hobby you have to drink different shades of brown fizzy liquid from an oversized glass and watch 22 very over paid prima donnas kicking a bag of wind around a field
BUT - since I started flying helicopters a couple of years ago there has been a noticeable change - there is a modicum of respect for those - and the skill required to fly them - and some people even show a mild interest and will hold brief conversations with me about them (before returning to the more pressing problem of how many englishmen play for Chelsea - and how come england is coached by a Swede etc etc :P )
But then people who denigrate my hobby and consider me a nerd or a geek are really confusing me with someone who gives a sh*t 8O
Because as far as I am concerned I love my hobby and will continue to enjoy it until I find some other pastime that's anywhere near as varied, ever changing, skillful and absorbing 8)
Also - I preferred BMFA when it was still called SMAE (Society Of Model Aeronautical Engineers) - that sounded so much more interesting - although I know BMFA is still the SMAE in the background as BMFA is only a working title supposedly designed to improve the hobby's image - not that it did any good

Blimey I'm glad there are other people in my situation ! My other half can't help but giggle when i try and talk Heli's! Shes always grown up with footballers and pub lads !
To be honest, i've been to car owners clubs etc and everyone has a nerd or two in them but nothing is a bad as a friend of mine that bumped into the Volvo 300 series owners club ! Us heli fans are rock stars compared to them !!!!

Just One word is all you need DILLIGAF - 'Does it look like I give a ***K' Cuz I certainly don't where my hobby/interest is concerned. Just remember that the majority of folk thought computers were nerdy 10-15 years back and now look at the difference.
So really where ever your particular intrest lies wether it be heli's, tiddlywinks, knitting or rock climbing, just live and let live, it's only because we seem to have an obsession with putting people into catagories that things become nerdy.

Wish my wife would actually call it a "Heli". She keeps telling everybody that I'm building a plane. Every time I correct her, but every time she still calls it a plane. What can you expect though ? Last year me and a buddy + other halves went to Leuchars Airshow. We stood in awe as the Red Arrows put on a superb display whilst the women stood brainwashed at how cheap some guy was selling perfume for !
