  • Maiden Voyage!

Well after a couple of weeks of setting up my trex 500, I finally felt confident enough to have a go at 'flying' her! (Even though i said i wasn't going to, i just couldnt help myself).

In all I spent about 30 minutes outside trying to trim and get everything perfect (to a degree anyway). I'm not very confident about flying in my back garden though as its so small.

Managed a few small hovers, one of which I landed a little hard and managed to break the front part of the landing gear. Luckily I have spares!

The most surprising part was the amount of effort it took to get it trimmed properly. Even now i'm still not sure about it. The pitch trim is pushed right forward and is only just right. Is this what the 'sub-trim' menu is for? Can I alter this in there to correct for this? I tried a couple of things to try and make it work but to no avail.

I can also say that flying the real trex 500 is absolutely nothing like flying it on realflight. Maybe this is just because of the stress factor but i felt like i was starting all over again. I'm sure it has helped, otherwise i doubt i would have even got it to hover (even if it was for a few short seconds).

Any advice about the sub-trim menu would be greatly appreciated.

    Mike

you need to put it bk to the middle mate and change you link length!!!!!!!!!! thats a bad move on your part!!! the subtrim is used for very very small adjustments when setting up, but please, put it bk to the middle and do in the linkage!!!

Excuse my lack of knowledge but I have no idea what you are talking about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (sorry my finger got caught on the exclamation mark key)

I have never heard about changing link length, in fact, i dont know what the 'links' are per se.

I am a total beginner so newbie language is preferred!

Just set it up mechanically and only use subtrims to align the servo horns/arms position:
        - set the collective pitch curve to 50% (50-50-50) all the way (moving the throttle stick will cause no move of the swashplate)
        - get all servo horns/arm off the servos
        - switch off the motor
        - switch on the receiver, transmitter
        - put the servo arms onto servos to get them perpendicular as close as possible
        - now use SUBTRIMs to set all servo arms to be ALL perfectly perpendicular to their linkages
        - then set up the head linkages to zero the rotor pitch and all head arms/linkages paralel/perpendicular
        - set the collective pitch curve to the normal (0-50-100) and set ccpm mixes to not bind arms, linkages and other head parts (modify the default values of 60,60,60)
        - PM me if you need more help

Little question for you ??? have you got the centre of gavity sorted ??? lift it up by the blades either side of the body and it should balance ... It its out of balance it will either tip forwards or backwards ....

Hmm good point. i've just checked and it does seem to be very slightly biased to the rear - even with a massive align 2600mah battery strapped to it. What could i use to balance it? I suppose more to the point, what takes it off balance?

            Regards

Watch those videos mate and everything will become more apparent. Especially the ones on servo setup and geometry.

Yip everything comes down to the mechanical setup mate, try not to use subtrim at all if you can help it. Just try a diffrent arm instead. Obviously in some cases you have to use it.
                  Cheers

I followed the Finles Bob videos and finally flew my 500 yesterday - just hovering and checking trim - absolutely rock solid in the hover - no trim adjustments needed, just need to tacho the head and set the throttle curve. Really chuffed I am!

The videos are just great imho!
