    Guys,

    I'll be setting up my new-to-me Raptor 50 soon and whilst I think I understand starting a nitro engine I'd appreciate a link to a beginners guide if you have one.

    Now for the really stupid question - how do you stop the engine? I'm thinking a pair of pliers on the silicon fuel pipe to starve the engine or is there a better way?

    Also, I understand that some 50-size models carry their own on-board glow-starter which draws its power from the rx battery. Sounds neat, can anyone offer any thoughts or links on this subject too?

    Hi,
    no such thing as a stupid question and the ones you have raised are far from it!
    Normally when we build a nitro build we tend to fit fuel clamps to the lines so that we can close these and they starve the engine of fuel.
    Pliers will eventually damage the fuel tubing.
    Align do a regulator which has a built in glow starter called a 2in1.

      Thanks for getting back so quickly. So what I reckon from the 2 ads is this:

      The align system provides voltage regulation AND rx battery level indication AND glow plug heating. Not programmable but also no need for another rx channel. Nice.

      The SwitchGlo just does the heating but offers more in the way of programability and takes an extra channel.

      Is that it or is there more to it?

        Hello Si

        Not to go against the advice of Machasm but there’s a cheaper way to solve normally asked questions.
        To stop the engine,
        you usually have a switch on the TX to totally close the throttle which stops the engine.
        And have a throttle hold switch also on the TX to hold the engine at tick over which I always use for safety while in the pits or walking to the patch to fly.
        It disengages the throttle to pitch when on, so if you accidentally move the throttle the engine does not rev up but the collective pitch is still operational.
        This switch is also used for practising auto’s with various other adjustments.

        Which TX are you using, if you have the manual it should tell you how to set the switches up to do the above.

        Cheapest way to start the engine.

        Glow stick, charger, starter, starter shaft, 12v battery,

          Cheers fella.

          I have a glow stick and a hefty cordless drill with a long 6mm hex bit so starting the engine shouldn't be a drama (I just fancy the on-board glow kit because it's neat). I'm using a DX7 (not aware of a discreet switch to cut the engine) and I had planned to use the throttle hold switch as you described for safety but was unaware that you could close off the throttle so far that the engine would actually stop: which also implies that I need to have the throttle open a bit to start it. If this is the case then the problem goes away as I have a reasonable understanding of the throttle curve menus. It's just glow engines that I'm new to.

          Please confirm that I've got this right.

            Yes you are right,
            you can use the throttle trim to stop the engine but using a stop switch is easier and quicker.
            There are def DX7 users on here so they can tell you how to set up the engine stop switch,
            I use a F10c TX

              on the dx7 you have whats called throttle recovery Si with it active basicly you just lower the throttle trim down to cut the engine. and then to "recover" your original position it takes just one click up

              unlike the dx6 the 7 does not have a cut button

              some people do however like to starve the engine of fuel to stop it, but i usually only use this method at the end of the day you can pinch the tube with your fingers ...pliers seem a bit overkill

                That’s one of the reasons I stuck with Futaba when up grading to 2.4
                plenty of switches and knobs to assign channels and modes to.

                Never have enough switches or knobs imo

                  yep its a pity. the timer is started by using one of the menu buttons i dont know if that could be asigned to make a throttle cut?? i have looked through the manual but there is no mention of it

                    I've been amazed with the many options you get with Futaba TXs

                    The only thing lacking is model locking,, thats what I call it anyway.

                    But as I usually reset the TX after changing models its not a problem
                    got in the habit as i use diff channel size RXs
