  • Use FF7 while charging ?

    Hi All,

    Just had my FF7 (T7CP) delivered .

Obviously i cant wait to use it, i dont have a heli yet but have the next best thing Reflex XTR.

Can i use the transmitter while it is plugged into the charger and still charging ? As you can with a mobile phone (Have looked in the manual but it doesn't say)

Signal strength is no problem as it will only plugged into my P.C. via the reflex lead.

    Regards Duzie.

The XTR lead should disable the transmit circuit in the Tx so power drain is far less than it would be at the field.

That said you cant charge and use it at the same time. I think if you switch it on while charging the charger will show as not charging.

I would recommend that you give a full charge and then use XTR, a single charge will last for months when not transmitting.

If you want to be absolutely sure it is not transmitting while using the sim remove the crystal from the Tx. I recommend this when using the Tx a slave (student) buddy as well.

Its not ideal but you could just use it with the charge that is in the Nimh pack so at least you get some stick time.

You can then leave the box charging over night etc.

The Tx will let you know when its going flat as it has a low battery alarm...

Isn't there some kind of chemical memory in the battery that will make the current charge the default maximum charge ? or something like that.

Mind you, they cant be very expensive, can they?

I picked up a 2100 Sanyo cell pack for my FF9 on ebay for 10 brand new was a bargain mind.

The key to charging is to get a decent charger. I used to use the standard futaba chargers but then after a number of packs lasted short of 1 season I got a Mercury EX and have not had a failure since.

Cell capacity does drop as time/charges goes by but cycling packs keeps them in tip top condition for far longer.

              Hi
just make sure you give that new battery its first FULL charge or
you could end up having issues in about 6-12months with charging
              and battery times.

I know its a bugger but you should always give 100% for the 1st charge.

It depends whether fun now outweighs the earlier demise of the pack... also depends on the pack you got with the Tx, e.g. if it is a 700mah NiCd then I would say go for it as the pack isnt worth using anyway. I would recommend 2100mah as a minimum now... no worries about battery life in my FF9 using one. Get a whole day without issue

Well i went for it, Had about an hour on reflex plus a bit of setting up(not even sure if tx is set up correct i just went for it) i had to reverse the sticks though.

Just got battery low voltage beep so i've plugged it back in.

Battery is the 700 one so if starts to lag i'll get another, probably the one you recommend(Rob).

By the way hovering is a bitch !!!

Manged to do it with all controlls, apart from rudder.

I like the hovering practice in XTR not used it until it was mentioned on another thread and thought I would see what it was like. With all controls enabled it would appear there is a large box that you must stay inside...

It allows inverted hovering which is nice and I guess any other flying that would stay within the "box". I keep trying to do the chaos but I am too heavy handed on the pitch and always crash quickly

As for config of the Tx, I use a spare memory for mine so there is no mixing, ATV etc involved which I think would complicate rather than help the sim setup.

                      Duzie

I have the same tx as yourself and at the moment I am having great fun on reflex. With the battery that came with thetx I only managed to get 5hrs of using it with the sim (from fully charged) before i had to charge it again.

Can you let me know how long you get with yours. I have bought a 2500mah nicad which I have yet to charge and use.

For everyone else, does this lenght of battery time seem really short or is this the norm.

                      Thanks

You can check your cable is configured correctly using a multimeter to confirm a pair of pins is shorted out, this is what disables the Tx's RF module (thus saving power/damage with aerial down etc...)

Looking into the square plug at the pins,
                        ---------------
                        *1 *2 *3
                        *4 *5 *6
                        ---------------

pins 4 and 5 should be a short.

Alternatively you can just remove the crystal (Xtal) from the Tx which has the same effect.

I don't have the xtal in my tx. I am going to use the 2500mah battery, if that doesn't last me months then I will check the pins.

I hope to be in the air with my raptor 30 by then, just getting my starting gear together and wanting to spend a bit more time on the sim first.

                          Thanks

I know what you mean, I like to spend time on the sim at the mo as the new baby prevents me actually disappearing for the morning to actually fly ah well in a few years maybe my son will be interested
