  • Fuel Consumption

Anybody able to give me an idea as to how much fuel an average 50 size heli uses ? Fuel seems to be sold by the US Gallon. How much flight time would you typically get from a gallon ?

    Hi
Magnum - Coolpower- Wildcat are all sold as the US Gallon

You can find that Bekra Heli fuel is in the UK gallon.

Depends on how much you abuse the heli to how long your fuel will
last! If you thrash it about it will use more bit like cars.

Also the engine make and settings make a diffrence.

Well on a raptor with an OS50 hyper running at 2000rpm you get about 8mins out of tank!

drop that down to about 1650-1700 that increases to about 12mins.

Raptor uses a 330ml tank a US gallon is 3.78litres

      thats 11.45 flights per gallon.

which works out to be 91 to 137 mins per gallon

Slightly off topic but now we know the average sort of flight time, what sort of mpg could be obtained?? 8O How fast does a raptor go in a steady forward cruise?

i got about 3 lines into some theory realised it was based on some quite major assumptions and thought better of it :-)

ignore changes in air density, ignore wind speed and altitude, have a fixed rotor speed at the more efficient end of the scale (1700?)...

I guess the top speed of a standard heli would be about 80 although I guess with higher head speed etc this can rise...

Based on Ade's previous calculations I make that about 182 miles

Has anyone put an RC heli through a speed trap...

seem to remember reading a few years back about the 3DMP being able to pass the 100mph mark...

182mpg now that would definetly make the commute to work a bit more affordable  . Pity I'm a 6 foot sixteen stone fatty ops: and no model heli would ever lift me.

another interesting aside, have Heli's been developed for load carrying, what sort of payload can models achieve. Suppose it could follow on from military drones and unmanned planes. Model heli's to deliver packages in a hostile environment

A chap I knew at uni told me about his father working on developing a video downlink for the military based in a largish model heli...

Of course these camera ships are quite common now and comercially available - how times change... They seem to be based on large petrol powered heli's though to get the lift capability for the camera/mount/gyro stabilised platform.

There was a video somewhere of a heli rescuing another heli from a frozen lake, hooked the skid onto its own... looked a little harey though!

Wasn't it this heli that was responsible for cutting off a mans leg ? and getting the manufacturers in trouble when they tried to export the China ?

3.5m rotor span! certainly is a big beast. Appears to be a 2 stroke petrol machine using fuzzy logic to control it so essentially anyone should be able to control it...
