  • Tail Servo Arm

I am just installing the servos on my Raptor and the servo arm on the tail servo is to short to attach to the tail slider (not sure what it is called). I have the standard set up and not a tail mounted servo.

Have I missed something obvious or do I have to use a larger servo arm.

    thanks in advance

I'm confused (easily done!), are you talking about the control wire being too short, the one that goes from the servo, along the frames and boom, to the control horn on the tail slider ?

Yes thats the one. Even with the ball link only on the first couple of threads it still seems to short.

is it a 30? if it is a 50 are you sure you have the 50 tail pushrod?

also have you checked how far the ball link at the other end of the pushrod is wound on? if its on too far it might cause this problem.

OK, in addition to the things Ade has mentioned, try turning the servo round, so that the servo output arm is nearer to the tail, i.e. turn it through 180 degrees (the tail servo is in the correct servo slot, right ?).

Check that you have the rod correctly mounted in the frame guides.

Check that the tail is fully inserted into the frames and that the tail gearbox in also properly inserted (this would be really strange to get wrong, as you'd have spotted issues with the tail belt !, but funnier things have happened )

some pictures of the linkage would help too.

              Thanks folks

I adjusted the ball link at the tail end and the link at the servo and it fits better now. I had a look at Raptor Technique and he has bent the arm slightly to get a better fit. I think I will give this ago.

Or you could just tail mount the servo and save the hassle

i am not a fan of the tail mounted servos. if you can put them up the front i would.

it keeps them out of the exhaust debris and protected from breaking booms. I have lost at least one tail servo from it being boom mounted and getting its lugs broken off then just not working.

thats one thing on the knight I would change if I could. Although its not boom mounted its stull up the back and suseptable to oil.

the trick with the raptors tail control is placement of the support hoops. The front one should be within 3mm of the joiner with full left rudder. All should be glued with 5min epoxy not CA which tends to loose grip quickly. The rest should be equally spaced ensuring a straight run.

I do not put a sharp kink in the wire from the guides in the frame down to the servo just a gentle bend near the frame guides is better as it leaves less risk of the wire bending under load.

The way Compass have done it on the Knight is ok, but that bracket is way to flimsy, I won't trust it again.

I'd rather a tail servo get broken in a crash rather than one falling off and being the cause.
