As a newbie myself, I'll tell you what I've gleaned so far, but hopefully others will jump in and fill in the details!! If nothing else, helps me check what I think I know!Originally posted by supamansuper View Posti got a 6ch radio yesterday could someone please let me know what the switches on the top are for eg trainer t/hold/gear etc.thanks
The trainer switch allows the Transmitter to be connected to another as a training aid. The idea is that an instructor can control the model and hand over to the pupil (using the other transmitter) simply by using the switch.
The gear switch is used for models with retractable undercarriage and is used to retract the undercarriage during flight and drop it again (hopefully!) before landing. On the DX6i, this switch is used as an Idle Up switch. This effectively remaps the throttle and pitch curves to a different setting to the normal mode. For example, normal mode may be set to 0% throttle / -3 degree pitch at the low stick position and 100% throttle / 10 degress pitch at full stick. However, for aerobatics like inverted flight, you need a high level of negative pitch with a high level of throttle. I'm no expert, but for more on throttle and pitch curves, take a look at the finless Bob videos at http://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=11373
Other switches on my DX61 (not sure if you have them) are:-
D/R or dual rate - I have separate ones for rudder, elevator and aileron - these allow the sensitivity of these stick to have 2 settings - perhaps a softer setting and a more aggressive setting to allow for different flying styles or weather conditions. I gather these aren't used much with helis - at least not at the learning stage.
The Throttle Hold switch effectively allows you to set a progammed throttle setting independent from the throttle stick. On an electric, it is usual to set this up so the motor stops when throttle hold is on. This is useful to instantly cut power. I'gve used it for setting up the swash plate as it allows full movement of the servos (collective pitch) without spinning the blades and chopping your hands off... I understand on Nitros this is usually used to set the motor to a safe idle.
I also have a throttle cut button which I understand is used to stop a Nitro
engine and is not usually used with elecric so I've set mine to start and stop the timer (thanks Boggy!)
I'm sure there's loads of other features I don't know about, but hopefully the above gives you a start!

Interesting point about remapping the throttle cut button. How did you do that? I also have a DX6i and it might make more sense to have the button on the front. By default the timer switch is the trainer switch, once to start, once to stop, hold to reset.
Other than that, your post sounds just about spot on to me.Growing old is mandatory...growing up is optional!

Hi Balders
Picked it up from Boggy's DX6i settings for the Blade 400. Noticed he'd set it and thought this was a good idea as throttle cut isn't used for electrics and it seems easier to press that to start the time.
To change on the DX6i, go to menu and choose Setup List. Then scroll down to Timer and click the scroll wheel. Then scroll down to the Switch option and you can then choose either the Trainer switch or the throttle cut.
Hope this helpsBlade 400 / DX6i / Phoenix / Blade CX2 / mCX / MSR
