  • Stock settings

Hi, I have just been told the previous owner of my heli has messed with the carb settings on the SC32 engine, anyone know the stock / manufacturer settings?, if not what is a good starting point . i have managed to get the thing to rough idle but if i throttle up it just splutters and dies, i am using 2.5 turns out on high end needle, and 5 turns out on low end needle(1/2 way out )
    thanks

    hi

im very much a beginner myself but i think 5 turns out on the idle screw( the one in the throttle barrel) is to much.

looking at the instructions for my irvine it says when you open the throttle quickly from idle, if the engine splutters and smokes heavily then thats too rich so screw in around 20 degrees.

if when you do the same the engine pauses a little before it picks up then thats lean so screw out a little.

i have done this with mine and it only takes the smallest of turns to make a difference.

but at the same time even though you can get a base setting like this final adustments cant be made untill the main needle has been set right.

some one better than me will most likely post but i hope thats helps

    merry christmas

      hi again

just checked my own ivine 36h and the factory settings for the main needle is 3 turns out.

now just checked my idle screw and its set at 2 and a half turns out.

but i did adjust it a little by the way i said above just to get a nice smooth idle and pick up.

what muffler, fuel and glow plug are you using?

the engine can "cough" and die due to being rich or lean the cough is a different sort of cough.

I would say that you are likely to be lean top end and rich bottom.

but before you adjust anything... start it up.

Now pinch the fuel line, It will speed up then slow down and stop.

if it takes more than 5secs to start to slow down then its too rich. Release the fuel tube before it stops and leave it. If it then slows down and carries on slowing down and eventually stops then its definetly too rich bottom end.

Lean it out a bit and repeat, dont over lean tho, just get it so it will justabout idle reliably.

You will now find that it will pick up nicely off of idle.

Now hover the heli for about 20secs, land and check the temperature of the backplate. You should be able to hold your finger on the back plate for about 5secs before it becomes painful, If its too hot richen the top end until it cools down, if you have to go a long way out then its probably the low end that is too too lean.

the other slight complication is that the 2 needles will probably interact with each other a little too. So if you lean out the top end a lot the bottom will get a bit leaner too and vise versa.

Ideally it should be above 8secs before your finger starts to hurt but depending on what fuel you are running it may not produce good power and run cool so you might have to compromise a little there. Some engines (especially 30s) just run warm.

cheers again ade, i took the oppurtunity to strip the engine and carb down and build from scratch as the settings are all wrong, , cleaned quite a bit of crap out of the carb so hopefully that will cure it.
set main needle to 2.75 turns and idle neede to 2.5 turns and will work from there, seems better already, had it idling quite nice and picked up ok on throttle increase, just took a bit of starting .
                will let you know
