  • Newbie (today!) i know nothing???

Hello to all. Joined today and hopefully its the first of many good choices!
I do need all the advice i can get (have read bubblefish777, VERY USEFULL).
Briefly, i am 57, started with cars, progressed to fixed wing and now want
to throw my cap in the ring of Heli,s, despite all the horror stories etc., So which heli ????. Im a fan of electric and would like something that is indoor/outdoor. Also any good reading out there ? Appreciate any advice and thanks in advance..
GIVE a man a Fish and he will eat for a day. TEACH him how to Fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day!!

Hi and welcome to the forum

I too am a newbie (about a month ago) and followed the general advice from the forum which roughly is:-

      1. Get a contra-rotating heli to start with (I got a Blade CX2) This will fly indoors in a reasonable size living room, and outdoors in DEAD CALM conditions

      2. Buy a PC simulator - Phoenix is generally thought to be the best on this forum. It's great fun and allows you to fly other more advanced models and appreciate how much difference there is between a contra and single rotor heli!

In my experience, budget for a few spares as well!!

      All the best

Hi and welcome to the forum

I agree with the guys. Start with a copy of Pheonix simulator and an E-Flite Blade CX2
Once you get the hang of those, then the next step is a touch more dependant on your situation (money, size of indoor space etc.). If the space is sports hall size, then an E-flite Blade 400 is a good next step as is a T-Rex 450S or SEv2 (both more expensive than the Blade 400). With a smaller space (house), it might be worth sticking with the CX2 or going for a Walkera 4#3B (Buzzfly) maybe?

Good luck and most importantly, have fun

Ask any questions on here - someone will know and it'll save you lots of head scratching.

PS: If you want to go larger, 30 size IC or 500 size electric etc., then have a look at www.bmfa.co.uk for a local club too

Welcome to the made hours and like the others have said ... Phoenix and a nice heli to start with ... You dont have to actually buy a contra roto heli if you dont want to ... Personally when I started I skipped those and went for a full on CP heli .. wont go wrong with a 450 or even a 500 if ya got the spare cash for it ... A 500 flies more like a small 30 than a large 450 .. only downside is its a little too big for indoor stuff apart from hovering ... I have Phoenix for sale if ya interested .... .

Hopefully this site - http://hubpages.com/hub/RC-Heli - and the links from it may also be of assistance.

RcHeliAddicts is by far the best UK heli forum to visit and get advice from.

Welcome aboard! I'm also a newbie and already the guys on here have given me excellent bits of advice. I have gone down a slightly different route and bought an T-rex 450 ready to fly package (PM me for details if you want) as well as Phoenix. I'm going to practice a lot with Phoenix prior to doing anything other than the odd hover and take the time to properly get to know the heli.

Good replies - I think the combination of the real heli and the sim is a good one. I think if you move straight to a CP heli, you will be tempted to fly it before you're ready(I know I would be!!) so the CX2 allows some real experience (and cost when you crash it!).

Maybe start with Phoenix (which has a Blade CX2 model available for download) and see how difficult the CP's are - I reckon I've probably saved a few thousand in crashes in the last month!

                          All the best

Welcome aboard. It's great fun & frustrating in equal measures, but the achievements far outweigh the disappointments.

This site is a great first port of call for all those headscratching moments, & there's quite a few of those.
It's good though, because you realise that you can teach an old dog new tricks & enjoy it along the way...
