  • Sh*t my pants - tried a figure of eight

Ok, i need more time on Pheonix.

I was over the field and having run a few batt's through on gentle hovering and taking her to the edge of the field and back (all tail in though with training gear on!), was a bit windy but not too gusty so i thought right... let me bring her round in a big circle and if that works out, i'll try a figure of eight.

    BIG MISTAKE

OK, shes still in one piece, shame i can't say the same for my nerves.

I bought her around, then it all went Pete Tong and tipped over too far, over reacted and the only way i could be sure not to bin it was to whack on some pitch and get her up high.. now shes about 50 stories up and i've lost orientation. She ended up behind me which isn't a worry because i'm standing in the middle of a big field but i kept it together and managed to bring her down, back in front of me and landed. No damage done but holly cr*p... i won't be doing that again in a hurry.

I recharged and did another 3 batt's on idle up 85/int/75/int/85 just doing some gentle hovering and simple maneuvering.

Back to Pheonix then. Seems a bit easier on there.

Well done for keeping it together. These things have a habit of turning nasty very quickly. I remember the time I flew over the top of me. Pulled it out with about 15 feet. My frigging knees were knocking after that.

Good reaction to being in trouble - go for altitude.

I moved from tail in hovering to figure eights by working on my hovering "T", then going on to gentle "S"s and then gradually widening these until they were true "8"s

I still get disoriented from time to time but hitting the collective and climbing out gives me enough time to think and recover.

Next objectives are flips (less threatening than loops or rolls) and nose in hovering (as a progression from slow pyros)

The great thing about this hobby is the endless opportunity for improvement. Can't see me doing that 3D sh*t for years though

Thanks Guys, i guess we all have to start from somewhere. Watching the guys (Like TrevBurley) doing 3D and more compex stuff, i don't know how they do it in such a small window... the 600 seems so big and fast and yet within seconds of me trying something more adventurous, it seems very small and difficult to orientate.

I've got a CSM720 on the way which will help, currently my old CSM SL420 drifts quite a bit and unless i'm head on into the wind, it doesn't do a great job of holding the tail, even with a JR 8900G.

I always set the simulator up to be more difficult to fly than the actual model. This way (for me anyway) it makes flying more easy.

Thanks Guys (and Trev for the offer of help(again)). I just need a local club with space for new members thats all, Last two crashes has cost me £90 a pop so i'm trying not to be too brave. Much more fun flying then rebuilding.

After a few months in, its clear that a good club is an essential part of the process and neccessary for progression. Trying to do all this stuff on your own is a lot to take on.
