  • Which co-axial heli: CX2, Medevac, Lama v4?

Hi guys, I'm new to RF helicopters but love flying and want to try my hand at one for fun at first. My friend recently got the MASH/Medevac and gave me a short demo of him hovering, but also says that the Lama v4 is good for beginners. I've read that a lot of beginners here use the CX2 also, however in the beginners post it says that flying outside, which I eventually want to do, is risky. Is this due to the design of the co-axial helicopters not having a functional rear motor?

I've also read that the Medevac and the Lama suffer from tail drift as the voltage drops, and that the CX2 is fine in this respect. Basically, I'm looking for my first co-axial heli and want the most manoeuvrable, reliable, stable and fun one for beginners. Which do you recommend?

One last thing, does anybody find that their 2.4GHz heli interrupts with their wifi? I've had a few 2.4GHz things which have disabled the internet and don't want my heli to do the same! Also, I guess one advantage of the Medevac is that I can put a camera in the cockpit later on and have a fps view!

If I had know about this site before I started learning to fly Heli's last year I would have saved a small fortune! Go get a CX2! It comes reccommended by some seriously good heli pilots here and from what I've seen you can still fly out doors on a calm day.

Besides at this stage you will be able to do a lot of practice indoors over the winter, maybe you will be ready to fly something better and bigger in the spring

I started with the rebadged BuzzFly (CX Walkera 5G6) http://www.buzzflyer.co.uk/Sub-Micro...2.4G/p-97-903/

Still fly it today to practice nose in etc. This is a clip from when I first bought it

I believe there is now another updated version called Walkera LM2 http://www.rc-fever.com/walkera-drag...on-p-3735.html

What ever you buy you will learn quicker and better with a Coaxial....good luck and let us know how you get on!

CX2 is the way to go

I have the luxury of being 1 month ahead of you. I bought a cx 2 a month ago and I have allready progressed to a decent figure of eight and nose in hovering. I cannot comment on the other helis but the cx 2 I can tell you is very stable and gives you great confidence as a new pilot, even outdoors in very little wind you feel in control.
When you go back inside into a sports hall you feel really safe and in control as you have no outside factors. The forward flight speed is quite suprising for such a small heli, and the rate of turn is also impressive when you get used to it.
Just remember you will need to walk out the shop not just with the heli but spare blades and battery.
The battery charge time is supprisingly long and you will need spare batteries to shorten the waiting time between flights.

whatever you decide just have fun with it.
P.s I now have a Black Hawk body on the cx 2 and it looks great

Cool, it sounds like the CX2 is the way to go. What's a good price for it? I've got a shop called Al's Hobbies (http://www.alshobbies.com/) round the corner from me (Finchley, London) and it's going for 114 but on their site it says:

BONUS: Now includes Aluminium Head/Hub, Over-current protection devices, 3 in 1 control unit and Spektrum AR6100e receiver.

I have no idea what they are, can anyone explain?

I also can't find a link for spares for E-Flite, only E-Sky and 2 other brands, so looks like I can't buy any spare blades from there.

the bonus isnt actualy a bonus anymore they all come supplied like that. leedsmodelshop/ fastlads/ hobbyhanger are all top rate suppliers and stock all the spares you need.
the cx2 has the best radio setup but all the contra's you mention fly aswell as each other.( cx2 also seems to have the best range of upgrades and accessories)

The Medevac and the Lama are bit more stable outside than the solid body type CX2's because the wind blows though the booms.
Today's outlook is fine for flying.

I think I'll stick with the CX2 as later on I'll be putting the Black Hawk shell on it. I rang Al's Hobbies and they said they have spare blades for £7, and the heli is £120. Is that a good price for blades? I'd prefer to go down the road and pick one up, that way if there are any faults I can go straight to the shop rather than having to package, send, take time off for arrival of it again e.t.c. Although the guy on the other end of the phone was bloody moody!

Does anybody know of any good model shops in central london that sell the CX2?

Also, I've read about different batteries/chargers for the CX2, which would you guys recommend? Or should I just go with the standard ones?

the blades are expensive, you should be able to get them for around 4.99. the standard charger is ok but a little slow. it can take upto an hour to charge a low battery. search for the flightpower upgrade batteries they are good or alternativly look on here at maxpoly or budget rc they both supply spares at reasonable prices!

How are the Dualsky X-Power batteries? I'm looking at batteries on this page http://alshobbies.com/shop/cat.php?id=606&Desc= but if they're no good I'll get the heli today and the spare batteries and charger online from maxpoly.

If your going to stay with this hobby invest in a decent charger say a bantom bc6 , it might set you back £90 but its well worth it.

Cheers guys. By the time I read your responses I had already gone out and brought the CX2 from the shop round the corner, with spare blades but no extra batteries and MAN I LOVE IT! I'm looking at the FlightPower and MaxPoly batteries as well as another charger, can't wait!

My first task is to set it to stationary hover, setting the trim isn't enough and I've got a guide on setting the CX2 with adjustments other than just trim which I cant wait to do tonight! In the long run, I plan on getting an Apache or a Blackhawk case
