Over the last week I decided I was going to finish off the Dragonus II 450 that I bought a year ago and half built. I put it together and finished installing the electronics yesterday. It's a tad slapdash - I could do with shortening several cables and generally tidying it up a bit. But it's functional at the least. (photos to come). My first CP heli - so plenty of room for improvement!
Spec is:
Dragonus II Intruder (original version) all plastic, wood blades.
RC-TEK Motor, 35a ESC, 3S 2200mah battery.
Cheapo GWS servos all round.
Futaba GY240 gyro.
Shulze 8ch reciever
Futaba FF7 radio
Decided to take the lot to school with me today and stay late to get some flying in the gym. So glad I did now because after checking and double checking the settings on the transmitter, unplugging the motor and checking all the collective etc was ok, unmeshing the motor from the main gear and programming the speedo etc well everything seemed inworking order!!! So tome to grow some balls and get her in the air!!
Only thing I had flown recently was my Esky Coaxial
but had also put a few flights on my old Piccolo a year and a half ago before trashing it.
Unfortnatly she has some quite bad vibes on spool up and spool down - but I have not balanced the blades so I need to do that. I took off the blades and it spins up smooth. Once you get her to 50% throttle the vibes dissapear though. And wow - the revs just kept on going up and up and the noise kept on growing and growing!!!! A proper heli!!!!!
She started to get light on her skids and noticed that she was leaning to the right a bit. So spooled her back down and slightly shortened the left servo link. Sorted!!!
Spooled her back up, she got light on the skids.... bit more cyclic and she lifted into a hover!!! Weeeee!!!!! I did about a minute of hovering and was suprised at actually how docile and stable the heli is. I expected it to be ultra twitchy cosidering i have no EXP dialed in at the mo because I just wanted to get a feel for the heli natually. But i had no trouble hovering her and keeping her within a square foot.
Started to get a bit more adventerous which was a bit silly for first flight. Yawed her a little left and a little right. Moved it forward and backwards a bit, left and right a bit. Punched the throttle a couple of times and my god it gains a foot in an instant!!! The tail holds steady though all of this
made me realise how rubbish the electronics in coaxials are really.
Decided that I had done more than enough for my first ever flight and so gently landed her and spooled down - cue more vibrations
Overall - I am so chuffed that I built this heli from scratch and it fly's. It didnt explode in mid air, it didnt catch fire, and I didnt stack it. Happy as larry really
Tried to take some vids but didnt realise the battery was flat on the camera. Only got about 20 seconds
Will post them up tomrrow anyway for your amusement.
ADDICTED!!!!!!
