I think it will all depend on what you are wanting from a gyro. A 401 should suit you ok if you are a sport flyer and getting into light 3D. I fly a 401 on a Raptor 50, and it works just fine with my style of flying (sportish)

The other option which seems to be extremely good is the spartan. Lots of the extreme 3D flyers at the club I fly at use the Spartan and its rock solid in agressive 3D.

I am sure others will pipe up during the day and give you sound advice on what would be good for you.

Used to fly a 401 on my Raptor 60- once I got past the stage of sport flying- got into backward flight and 3d-stll learning that I'am afraid!!- found tail would sometimes let go,,, since upgraded to a 601 setup,,,,,, waaay better- really all depends on your level and style of flying.

a 401 with am s9254 servo will be fine, i fly my 600 with this set up and will hold the tail perfectly well, Let a hardcore 3d flyer have a crack with the super pro and he thought it was excellent for a 401, only thing i would say lets it down a little for the hard 3d flying is it is hard to get the gain perfectly correct, to get it to hold perfect on tail down drops you have to have it highish, but then can cause a little waggle when punching out.
If you want to go all the way to hard 3d then an 611 set-up would be the better choice

Spartan 760 would be the better option but if your on a budget then go for the 401/9254 combo. Will tell you now that i cant seem to stop praising the spartan thesedays, its one bloody brilliant gyro and rock solid feel to it. I highly recommend one to anyone.

              Cheers

a spartan with a 9254 is just as good as a 611 combo and nearly half the price

                spartan £125 9254 £50 611 combo £279

The other thing I would add about the 401 is that it is very easy to setup and pretty much works straight away without much tweaking.

Some of the CSM gyros are quite good as well but they are not any less expensive and since the 401 is very popular in the US as well there is a ton of info on forums about it (not that you'll really need to scour forums anyway because with the 401 most of the time you can pretty much just stick the thing on and connect the wires and off you go)

Id say the same thing about the Spartan to be honest. A sinch to set up and the stock gyro settings work a treat.

I'd like to put in another recommendation for the Spartan.

You don't have to be an experienced 3D pilot to reap the benefits of this gyro. It really holds rock solid whatever your doing and is precise. Its only about £40 more than the 401 and will quite easily grow with any experience you may gain. The same can't be said of the 401. So overall I think its a sound investment.

The Spartan also holds its resale value incredibly well should you change for whatever reason.
