    Go buy Phoenix
    http://www.phoenix-sim.com/welcome.htm

Then when you can hover properly you need to look at the places you have to fly ... Sports hall or field.... that will have a degree of influence over the type of heli....

The next consideration is the depth of pockets......
    sim £80
    little electric 200-600
    nitro 300-1500
    ish.....

first question is one of budget. how much you looking to spend, and have they ever flown before? The blade CX2 is a good place to start, £110 plus delivery

dont consider nitro unless "your friend" has access to a club, or people that can help him/her. with electric i would advise no bigger that a trex 500 unless as above.

so that leaves you with a price problem ! does it have to be ready to fly (rtf)including radio? or has he/she got thier own??

          What is your budget?

I came into this hobby with my eyes open. I purchased my tx first which cost about £200 and still going strong. After practicing on a simulator, £70, for a few months I then went and purchased my model. All up with field equipment about £800.

How much do you like this person and is it going to be more than a five minute fad?

I would always recommend a 30 or 50 size nitro for the flyability in most weather conditions. Those that recommend a coaxial bladed model for a starter is not going to get anywhere sitting in the lounge imo. If you get a 450 size electric you will probably have, depending on your facilities, alot more days where you don't fly than when you do as a beginner until you really get to grips with the control.

Just go and visit a club that flies exclusively outdoor and see how many small electric models there are compared to 30 size nitro, 500 size elctric, 50 size nitro, 600 electric and 90 size nitro models.

I do have a T-Rex 450, so I am not anti small electric. I just don't recommend it as a starter if you want to get in plenty of flying.

it ok paying out for a nitro heli .. but then ya need to find a club to fly at and insurance .. .an what if he finds he does not like it ... like most of us say ... buy phoenix ... and a cheapy Tx ... for bout £200 the pair and see if he likes it in the sim .... If he does not then ya can get most of the money back ya spent .. if he decides thats what he wants one then fair enough ... or go the little elec route then ya get a blade 400 all in for roughly what u want to pay .... but with a sim ya crash and ya just hit reset ... in real life ya crash ya waiting on spares and also the time setting it all back up ... at the end of the day the choiceis always yours .. these are just our thoughts thats all ....
