  • New kid with CX2

    Hi All,

Have been looking around for a starter heli since buying a "mosquito" 3 channel for £20 & having a ball with it.

The CX2 seemed to be the recommendation, so i got one online.

First thing i noticed was how big it is (compared to the trusty mosquito), and it seemed a lot more serious. We've only got a small house, and after a couple of flights without incident, i clipped the sofa & chipped an upper & lower blade.

Got lots of replacements today, and put everything back together to notice that it was now "wobbly" & seemed out of balance. I stripped the whole heli, thinking i'd damaged one of the shafts. I wasn't able to undo the screwed washer thing, and managed to put my small screwdriver into & under the nail of my left middle finger....not recommended & is still throbbing.

Put everything back together, and tried a flight in the conservatory. Pinged another blade on the sofa, so replaced that & because it was calm, took it into the back garden.

Things now made much more sense, and i was able to fly around for a whole battery's worth

As it was flying, i noticed that the lower blades weren't in line.

Fitted my new spare battery & swapped the lower blades for two fresh ones.

Back up again in the garden, and had a great time!

In conclusion, i still have a long way to go, but i've learned that the CX2 needs space, especially with a novice at the controls, and also that in fairly calm conditions, you can learn to correct for the very slight breeze & as long as you stay low (2 to 3 feet), things aren't too bad.

Any suggestions as to how to balance the blades? Read something about warm / hot water. Is this a good / safe way to proceed?

One last thing, don't overlook the Mosquito.....cracking little thing, although the guy in Hobby Stores at Chelmsford thought i was taking the mick

Been trying to get hold of some sensibly priced syma style flybar blades for my mosquito. Trouble is, its almost the same price to just go and by the whole heli as to get the blades shipped.

Welcome mate and congrats with your new heli.

When you had a blade clip and replaced the blade you mentioned a wobble, hold the CX2 throttle up and watch the top of the rota assembly (blue area) when you add speed does it seem to blur as if its moving side to side, if so I'd guess you've bent the shafts, order a replacement inner and outer shaft if so.

Plus I can't emphasise enough how unflight worthy Contras are outside, I know she seems big and the rota wash is powerful, however when a slight breeze gets between the two sets of rotas up she will go, remember the CX2 will get buffered in a house draft, she's an indoor machine only, the evenings you might be able to fly her safely outside are few and far between, what might seem like a still day still produces slight breezes we might not pick up on but it'll cause a Contra serious grief

That's if you want to keep her looking nice and undamaged that is, the rest is up to you.

      Best of luck mate.

That show is a load of b*llocks, it always amazes me with the pile of shit the producers choose to be the successful winners, that all the app-lee-cnuts are complete and total w*nkers.

If there the cream of London's business center no wonder this country is going down the pan.

Back on point, good flying mate, but outside...ouch, one day that's going to bite you big time if your not careful my friend.

Take it from someone who knows and has been there.

Your control looks pretty good to me. I upgraded to a Trex 450 when I was at less than your stage.

                  Thanks for the positive comments.

I have just done my first two batteries worth of consolidated hovering. Tricky at first for me, but gradually improving & felt quite a bit more in control, comparatively speaking.

I did play in the garden today, as the in-laws came over & wanted a look. I know i shouldn't have, Cambs Flyer, and there was a bit more wind, but i didn't hit anything & they thought it looked good.

Will continue to consolidate the easier tail in hover, then move on to the nose in stuff.

Am now properly bonding with the CX2, and will begin to consider my next "option".

Should really look into a club as well as time goes on & i get something a bit more serious.

The CX seems to have the standard clockwise yaw issue, but i'm trimming & compensating.....not ideal & a bit of a shame, but it is only a "toy" compared to the big-boy kit.

it may only be a toy but its still good stick practise and fun,
had a play with my CX2 today.
Still feel the same flying that, ie. not wanting to damage it, same as flying my 90 Agusta 109
Going to put a clip of todays CX2 flight in the movies forum along with my bigger toy flights
Its fun flying no matter what it is

a good tip to get more response from the cx2 is to move the controll arms out one hole on the servo arms but you have to relevel the swash plate after it makes it more responsive and is more fun by the way that was good fying in such a small garden
                      well done

                          Right,

Have now got involved in the amateur trimming of this little heli, which was probably a mistake as i'm really feeling my way around!!

It moves to 4 o'clock on takeoff, which i've been trying to dial out but putting one turn on the left servo arm, which helps a little, but it's still there

Will work more on that one, but i have a new issue. The heli now yaws up to 90 degrees seemingly at will, which is probably due to me messing with the gain!

I took Cambs Flyers advice, and have kept indoors, working on my control. I've done another little vid, which hopefully shows some improvement.

If i could get the heli to hover & hold its heading, then things'd be easy, but as it stands, i'm compensating all the time!!!

An example of the random yawing can be seen at the end just before the landing.....keeps me on my toes, i suppose.

                          Will keep tweaking.

Excuse the use of the slow-mo at the beginning, but the rotors looked nice in the sun

moving the servo arms will only unlevel the swash plate you need to have the swash 90degrees to the shaft in all directions, when the heli takes off you will get some movement from the wash from the blades ,have you checked to see if the shafts are bent as even a little bit will effect it and if you get close walls, furniture etc this will also cause instability but make sure the swash is level first any problems just post

looking at that mate i would say your gyro gain is too low. your not getting a nice sharp stop on the tail its swinging around. turn the gain up till it wags like a dogs tail when you hover then slowly back it off till it holds solid.
that was a small area to be hovering for so long and i would think turbulance coupled with low gain was causing the piro'ing at the end
