  • heading hold gyros

    hi guys,
im new to the sport im also very confused!! please tell me..... do i have to have a tx with aheadin hold function or is this another piece of kit that can be added at a later time. is it switched on by the tx or is it on all the time??? help ops:

The HH gyro is not part of the Tx, it is a piece of equipment that fits between the reciever and the tail servo( same place a normal gyro would). It is not neccessary to have a HH gyro when starting out, but if you can afford it get it. Hope this helps.

      hh gyro

ok so hh gyro goes between servo and rx. so standard set up would be servo to hh gyro to rx and no standard gyro ? is that right ops:

        Trogmaster,

The HH gyro is a device that detects minute accelerations in the yaw plane of the helicopter (heading) and correct them. To the pilot, that means that the helicopter will not yaw unless commanded. In order to achieve this degree pf control, the Gyro is put between the Receiver and the servo. It recieves the commands from the receiver and allows them to pass through to turn the helicopter. In the mean time, because the gyro can also command the servo, when necessary, it can move the servo in order to prevent any uncommanded external influences like wind or torque from changing the heading of the helicopter.

Or in laymans terms, the Heading hold gyro always trys to hold the nose of the helicopter still, until such time as you want it to move. Some heading hold gyros can be both, Heading hold, or Conventional (or Rate) in that case, you do have to use a switch on the TX to change the modes. The difference is a Rate gyro will stop tail movement after it is started, a Heading Hold will try to prevent it before it starts unless you say otherwise by moveing the Rudder stick.
-I don't crash, I just land with enthusiasm.

A couple of 600n's with stuff on them that makes them fly..
A 550 fbl with even more stuff on it to make it fly
And a Mars 470 which needs stuff putting on it to make it fly

          And a DX8 too

            Non-heading hold / Heading Hold

            Not the full story:-
The real difference is in Non Heading hold when a heli starts to yaw either through torque demands or outside influence the gyro will sense the swing and apply a correction - but once the tail swing has been stopped the gyro will return the tail servo to neutral, by which time the heading has changed.
But in Heading Hold Mode the gyro will keep the corrective input in untill the helicopter has returned to the original heading.

I've been looking into upgrading to a hh gyro as well, and at the end of the day i think it comes down to how much you are willing to spend.
I am swaying at the moment to a Futaba GY401 and you can buy it with or without the 9254 servo depending on what you need. The gyro on its own is about 100.
It seems to get good ratings from people who use them.
Look at the review section here on the site.
Any feedback from others would be helpfull before I buy another betamax if you know what i mean!

                        Troggmaster,

Where are you located? Sounds like you need to meet up with someone over a coffee or maybe at a flying field and go through everything.

                        Cheers

You need to get some books/video's on the subject or contact a local bunch of fliers - On the evidence of your posts so far your only going to waste your money unless you get some practical help !!
By the way now that you have told us you have a gy401 - I can tell you that this gyro is a hh gyro .
It can be switched on the Tx from normal to HH as you wish - no need for another Gyro!!!!
                          Dave :? :?

i dont own a gy 401 i was just stating that you need to have a tx which is capable of turing the avcs on. i own a normal piezo gyro and wanted to know if i could add a hh without changing my tx. i am based in mitcham surrey i dont think there are any flying clubs around me and you tend to get treated like an idiot at the model shops for asking very basic questions but they dont mind selling you gadgets. thats why i have had to go it alone. i know it will be hard and expensive but thats why im here!

i will look into some books and vids thanks

Mick Charles Models is close to you and they will not treat you like an idiot, nor will they sell you anything that is not needed. Just let them know you are a beginner.
