Don't give up, its not as easy as some other hobbies to get started... its a pretty steep learning curve all round at first but 18 months in (where i am) and so, so rewarding

I'd defo get a sim of some description too... there are free ones available if cash if tight

Wow, that would be nice I can't believe how nice the people are on this site. OK, I'll stick with it. So what setting would be OK for learning a 250? I'll dig out the manual and rebuild it from the ground up. )

Basically, your heli is flybarless. Some years back, most RC helis had a mechanical stabilisation device called a flybar. Flybars are mechanically complex however, add weight, drag and are a sod to fix after a crash. They've largely been replaced these days by electronics gyroscopes - so called flybarless controllers. The 3G and the 3GX are examples of such devices.

My motor chugs when you give 0 to 1/4 and then spools up really quickly. Any ideas? My Th pitch is 0/80/80/80/80

                                Transmitter setting for my 250

                                Setup for the T-Rex 250 SE/Pro Super Combo/Pro DFC – Spektrum DX6I and DX7 Transmitter.

                                * Beginner Settings

                                * T-Rex 250 Pro DFC – See the owners manual for 3GX setup.

                                Model Type: HELI

Swash Type: 3 Servo: CCPM 120 degrees

Reverse: This will vary depending on which servo brand and Tx you are using.

                                Revolution Mixing: Inhibit

GYRO: Set the gyro gain as high as it will go without getting tail wag.

I am using the Futaba GY-401 Gyro.

                                Rate SW-GYRO

                                0: 50%
                                1: 72.0%

                                Swash Mix:

                                Aileron: -60%

                                Elevator: +60%

                                Pitch: +60%

                                Travel Adjustment:

                                Throttle: -100% / +100%

                                Aileron: -100% / +100%

                                Elevator: -100% / +100%

Rudder: -80% / +80% – Adjust to control tail servo response and speed of pirouette.

                                Gear: -100% / +100% *

                                Pitch: -100% / +100%

                                * If you are using the Gear Channel to control the Gyro Gain then use these settings as a starting point and adjust them as needed. +72% / -28%

For quicker control response increase the ALIE and ELEV Travel Adjustment. *If you set the values too high the servos might bind.
Beginners should use the default values of -100% / +100%

Pitch Curve – Option 1: Hover at 3/4 throttle

Spektrum DX6I: Normal Mode and Stunt Mode

Set pitch curve 1 for -2*
Set pitch curve 3 for 0*
Set pitch curve 5 for +7*

Spektrum DX7: Normal Mode, Stunt Mode 1, Stunt Mode 2

Set pitch curve 1 for -2*
Set pitch curve 3 for 0*
Set pitch curve 5 for +7*

                                Curve 1 = 40% > -2* pitch measured with a pitch gauge

                                Curve 2 = 45%

                                Curve 3 = 50% > 0* pitch measured with a pitch gauge

                                Curve 4 = 65%

                                Curve 5 = 80% > +7* pitch measured with a pitch gauge

NOTE: The curve percent will vary from one helicopter to another depending on setup.
Use a pitch gauge to set the pitch for the curves.

                                Pitch Curve Hold: 0-INH-50%-INH-100%

Option 2. If you would like to hover at mid stick to learn on use these pitch curves.
This is what I learned with. Some beginners like to learn this way instead of hovering at 3/4 throttle.
The drawback with this is you will have to learn to hover at 3/4 throttle if you plan to do any 3D flying.

Pitch Curve – Option 2: Hover at 1/2 throttle

Spektrum DX6I: Normal Mode and Stunt Mode

Set pitch curve 1 for -2*
Set pitch curve 3 for +6*
Set pitch curve 5 for +7*

Spektrum DX7: Normal Mode, Stunt Mode 1, Stunt Mode 2

Set pitch curve 1 for -2*
Set pitch curve 3 for +6*
Set pitch curve 5 for +7*

                                Curve 1 = 52.5% > -2* pitch measured with a pitch gauge

                                Curve 2 = 65%

                                Curve 3 = 77.5% > +6* pitch measured with a pitch gauge

                                Curve 4 = 80%

                                Curve 5 = 81.5% > +7* pitch measured with a pitch gauge

NOTE: The curve percent will vary from one helicopter to another depending on setup.
Use a pitch gauge to set the pitch for the curves.

                                Pitch Curve Hold: 0-INH-50%-INH-100%

                                Throttle Curve

                                Normal

                                0-50-75-75-75

                                Stunt Mode

                                75-75-75-75-75

                                Throttle Hold: Set to 0%

                                D/R & EXPO

Adjust D/R and EXPO to your personal preference.

                                Option 1.

Set D/R for ALIE and ELEV to 70%
Set Expo for ALIE and ELEV to + 30%

Option 2. If the settings above are not tame enough try these settings.

Set D/R for ALIE and ELEV to 50%
Set Expo for ALIE and ELEV to + 30%
Set Expo for RUDD to + 15%

All this will give you lower head speed and less servo travel so the
heli isn’t too twitchy and with the low pitch curves the heli won’t take off on
you if you move the throttle up to fast. Also the heli won’t slam down to the ground hard if you move the throttle down too fast.

When you switch between normal and stunt mode there will be no pitch jump or throttle change with these settings.
These settings have been used by us in my flying club and work well.
With the -2* pitch you will be able to pull down the heli in wind.

Here is a list I made of common Dual Rate and Expo settings for Standard/Beginner/3D settings for Quads and Helicopters.

If you don’t like to use Expo you can set it to LIN.

                                LIN = Linear

Some radios use the term Line instead of LIN.

A good combination would be to use the Beginner Settings on Switch Position “0”
and use the Ultra Beginner Settings on Switch Position “1”.
