As said, you're probably best learning on something much more modern. I'd strongly advise investing on a 450/500 size model. That will not be easy to set up and learn on and spare parts will be nigh on impossible to find.

Really hope these comments aren't discouraging you but hopefully our experience will help you start off in this great hobby.

At the very least you'll need a simulator and a modern collective pitch micro to learn on first. It doesn't look like the sort of helicopter I'd be wanting to fly as a complete novice!

I had one of them when I was 15 and man was it hard work but it did fly although I was a member of a club and they gave me loads of help. It was a club near Shaftesbury I wonder if they are still around, John Brikell was in the club and he gave me loads of help.

I don't think I would attempt to fly one of them now if I was a novice, try and find something like a 450 to start with and one that you can get loads of spares for.

IMO the Trex 450 is a good shout.

The best option would be a flight school. Flying any heli for the first time is usually a very short and expensive exercise. A smaller heli like an msr or mcx2 has a much better chance of survival.

I painlessly went from mCX2 to nQX (yes a quad!) to mCPX to 130X in a couple of months. Also invested in a good sim to practice on from the start (neXt) and a decent Tx (DX8) which I use for everything. I'm still very much a novice, but I think I could confidently fly any modern cp heli now, but I doubt I'd be able to fly your "project"

Sadly we seemed to have scared Gerry off

Which is a shame because he only got good constructive advice.

                  MFA Sport 500,
                  My first model helicopter!
It had aluminum plates for blade grips and you used to have to put a large C spanner around the 0 deg setup and twist the whole thing to the desired pitch angle! Primative wasn't in it. It's possibly not obvious but the egg shaped bits are plywood and it had a wire tail drive, I was well ahead of the curve and had a Morley gyro that was actually erm.... a gyro (scope) It used to have a spun weight inside that could be measured for its spin speed relative to the casing it was in. It was F&c&1n9 awful to fly!
Still, the feeling of sheer happiness as it floated backwards over my open mouthed head was fantastic!
Despite it's agricultural nature I didn't smash it up.
                  Happy Days......
                  D
.......unless otherwise stated, all opinions are my own.
