  • wonky backflips

I am learning inverted hover and want to get my flips nice and tidy, when I do a back flip while tail in i end up nearly side ways, yet when I do the flip from inverted nose in it stays nice and straight the whole way through.

I am POSITIVE that I am not adding rudder during the flip, but I am sure that i doing something wrong.

I have tried doing the flips slowly and fast but the transition to inverted always goes wonky but to upright its fine.

    Any Ideas?

In the same place as you, only its when I roll left or right things get wobbly. Some unplanned interaction on the sticks, I kept at it on the sim and gradually it's getting better along with my nose in inverted hovers. Maybe on day I'll try it low enough to actually see the Heli.

Have you tried or got a little expo on rudder, take a look at the length of your sticks. It's hard to diagnose without someone looking over your shoulder whilst you fly

Its going to be rudder. Its the same on my aileron tic tocks.

There are 3 ways to iron it out.

You can either do it properly and learn not to 'add' rudder when you shouldnt.

            Or

Add in some Expo so that its effect is less significant

            Or

If your FBL allows you to, widen the rudder dead band.

I used the last option, which still leaves my rudder nice and 'crisp' but allows me a little bit of wiggle room on the stick for unintended movement, so I have to genuinely put in a bit of rudder to get it moving rather than just glance it moving from positive to negative.

For me its stress related also - so the more worried I am the worse it gets, as a result it still rears its head when I would really prefer it didnt !

I think I remember cheating when I first learned flips & loops by maxing out the spring tension on the rudder spring.

At least that way you can flick the throttle up and down but you can only apply rudder if you really mean to, then once you get more at ease you can gradually release the spring.

The deadband is a good Idea, I think i'll try that, then that way I know its the rudder and its me so then I can consciously stop my self from doing it.

Does the same thing happen on the simulator? Certainly neXt and Phoenix allow you to record your "flight" and you can watch your own stick movements on the virtual TX on-screen.

It does not as bad though but appears I am adding some right aileron.

I prefer the spring tension to be tight all the time for this very reason, if I fly someone else's model who likes none I can barely fly it as I don't feel in control. It will definitely help to get rid of unwanted interaction.

I tried changing the cyclic dead band on the Vortex (I maxed it out in fact), just to see if it was me adding aileron (Seeing is believing) and my flips were spot on although flying was a bit odd. I set the deadband back to default and after 20 flights this morning my flips are a LOT better and my rolls are spot on. Going for another few flights in a bit to try and get it perfect.

Glad to see that you have it sorted out

I think there are three steps to learning something new, especially something like flips.

The First is to have the guts to do them, and to cope with getting control back when they dont go quite right.

The second is to have them just right, without the unintended inputs or out of sync timings.

The third is to have complete control over them, so you can deliberately move the heli around during the move, and correct when things are starting to go wrong before they actually go wrong.

Im still at 1st base to speak but desperately trying to get to 2nd
