  • Want to get back into hobby, what is best for me to do?

Hello everyone. I was into Rc heli's for a while a few years ago, but due to health issues I had to stop.

I am now fighting fit, and found two helis in my loft! One is a Trex 250 clone, unfortunately with a broken boom and linkage, and the other is a blade MSR, which won't work. I think the batteries are dead, as they was left in the charger (unplugged).

It's been a few years since I have flown, I never learnt collective pitch fully, only a little hover.

My question is, do you think its worth fixing up the 250 to learn on, or to get something else a little easier to begin with again?

Hoping to get back into this .

Maybe a sim would be your best bet, along with £10 worth of batteries for the MSR?

Blade 180 CFX - field beater for new moves
Blade Red Bull BO-105 CB 130 X - scale fun flying at the field when the tail isn't broken, which is not often.
    Blade mCPX - sold

Blade Nano QX - house fly of choice
Blade mCX2 - retired but will be back when the kids get a bit bigger

The 250 can be a great helicopter, but I would call them a more advanced model, they can be quite lively and are fiddly to setup and not particularly crash resistant. If I were you I'd keep it though as they're a great garden / park flier, but get some practise in on other models first.

Chances are it's just the batteries you need for the MSR so for the price I'd definitely pick up a couple of those.

After that, there are a ton of great choices to learn on. There are some really good sims out there, which are worth a look if you have a good TX, and I wrote up a quick guide to some of the better beginner models:

Get a quad ….. lol, just kidding.

Good advice above. Get that mSR fired up with some new batteries.

I never got round to getting a sim as I am on a Mac, can you get any good sims that run on a mac now?

I did have a good TX, a Spectrum DX6I, but I got rid of that with my Blade 400, should of kept it really, but needed money a little while ago.

Think I will have to order a few batteries for the MSR then. Looked on eBay, they are not too bad actually price wise.

I also have seen the V911 helicopter for not much more than the price of a few batteries for the MSR, is this any good? I saw it in myxiplx guide, and for the price I might as well get it.

For the simulator you can get neXt these days, it's getting some decent reports and it's available for Windows, Mac and Linux. There are a few rough edges but I quite like it and it's the obvious choice for anybody with a Mac.

The v911 is pretty good, but I haven't flown a MSR so can't compare directly. The quality of the radio does make a huge difference though and the v911 won't bind to your DX6i so you would be flying it from a very imprecise plastic transmitter. I think you'll be better off just buying some batteries for your MSR.

I use these batteries for my Blade micros. £2.50 each and better spec than the originals:-
                1S 3.7V Blade Series

I also use the neXT sim on a mac and find it does the job just fine. You could also consider Heli-X as an alternative. Both are pretty good value and available as demo downloads. If you pick up another DX6i you could use it for both your MSR and sim. That would be better than buying the V911 I would have thought.
