  • The king of n00b questions...

... but I'd rather ask then get it wrong so here we go.

I got my first RC Heli kit yesterday (AlignT-Rex Pro V2) and it lists 4 accessories in the manual:

    1) R48 - Anaerobics Retainer - Provided
    2) T43 - Thread Lock - Provided

So far so good, but then we get:

    3) CA Glue
    4) Grease

and these two don't seem to be provided. I'm happy to go and get some, but could someone be kind enough to suggest what I should be buying please? (and, yeah, I've figured it as far as 'glue & grease' ).

I guess while I'm here it would make sense to go the whole hog and ask what you would recommend to replace 1 & 2 when the provided stuff runs out as well?

    Cheers

Hi mate. 1) is basically green loctite. It is basically used to make bearings grip their housing. Thread lock, you usually have two types: red, permanent, and blue, non permanent. For important bolts that you will need to remove, I and others often mix the two together to make a strong, reliable but none permanent bond.

CA is CyanoAcrylate - basically good superglue, and comes in very forms of thickness.

For grease, you want a good OneWayBearing (OWB) grease. Hobby stores will stock all this, but if you want it online, try to main stores such as Fast Lads, Align-trex, Midlands etc...

        Hi,
Congrats on getting your first Rc Heli,I have Thick,Medium and Thin ca glues but mainly use thin and medium on a heli build you can get these at your local model shop or online. The retainers in the kit should be fine to use for replacements I use Loctite branded products, you can build a good model using 243(blue)for thread locking parts you will need to remove,271(Red)for screws you never really want to move on their own and 609/603 for fixing bearings to shafts.Their are many other retainers for different uses but you will mainly use the ones I have specified. I think you only really use grease when building a heli on the one way bearing and you normally get this with Align kits,I use this grease on the one way bearing and found it to work fine.Might also be worth getting some Tr-flow oil for moving parts .

If you run out of thread lock on a single build, you've used too much! LOL. Be sparing with thread lock, use a tiny amount of the last 3 or 4 twists of the thread of screws where metal goes into metal. You do not want the stuff slapped on and dripping everywhere!

The supplied amount should be plenty!

Cheers, I must admit I watched the Freddy Can Fly 'How to Loctite properly' YouTube video after posting this question earlier. But hell, seeing as how I'll be driving an hour to the nearest model centre tomorrow I may as well get it all in one trip.

I usually save the petrol and order on line from e.g. Align trex, Fastlad, Midland, RC Heliguru,Quick UK etc. They all ship out very promptly.

Hi Mike, yeah, you're right, I was just being impatient lol.

You and Planehazza both mentioned Fast Lads whose site I hadn't come across before, really like it, just placed an order for about £20 worth of threadlock, glues and greases and a Banana/Deans charger cable I need for the charger I bought.

Another site to eat my wallet with

If you're just starting out then a simulator is a good idea to invest too

Yeah, I picked up Aerofly RC7 Ultimate a month or so ago and have put just over 24 hours in to that so far, have steady hover and control both tail in and nose in without having to overly think about it (not an instinct yet though) and fairly ok with general flight, all with the T-Rex 450, but it still gets away from me occasionally though!
