  • 5 year old Beginner, what do you recommend?

    HI Guys,
My 5 year nephew has been to the field and has used the sim when he comes to mine.
I've just got a text from his dad asking me to recommend a heli for him,
Now,, I've lost touch with the smaller stuff on the market so I'm after advice,,
Tom I know your out there and from what I've seen of your post you seem to be in the "know" :-D
Ideally I was thinking on the lines of a heli that uses the same stick movements as Mode2.
    Thanks In advance,
    Tye

I'm sure that sentence has a missing end somewhere! mode 2 ?

          Any idea on budget?
How good is your nephew? Are you thinking co-axial, fixed pitch or collective pitch?

              lol mode 2,
Re; co-axial, fixed pitch or collective pitch, had no idea what would be the best move, that's why I thought I'd ask.
I've spoken to Raj @ Align-trex, he recommended a small quad just to start,

Can't argue with that for a 5 year old! Safe, fun and relatively easy to fly!

Ty, years ago when I was first interested in Heli I went down the route of the bell twister medivac coaxial Heli. Little 4 channel thing, but quite good as a beginner Heli. Think it was around £100, but parts were avaliable when it got damaged. Or you could go down the 3ch helis which are more toy looking, but again fly well and can teach you orientation, these are only around £20, but make sure you can gets parts easily, as nothing worse than on first flight, breaking something and having to throw it away. Had a quick look on teebs and found this.

My 4 year old nephew gets on pretty well with my old Blade mCX or the newer mCX2 would be just as good, also he loves the sim. He also likes the Vapor.

The mCX is pretty stable & wont move fast on cyclic so he can concetrate on learning height control & tail.
Also the smaller blade transmitters are much better than a full size one.

                    Tim.

My little nephew Jude wrote his letter to Santa asking for a heli , But I've ordered the quad in the above post from Raj.
Have also ordered 2 extra li-po's and 2 spare sets of blades so it should keep him the air for some time.
With flying a quad, as Raj pointed out Jude will only have to control the height & direction movements without having to worry about keeping it level, which will be a step in the right direction.
So with the quad and the sim he should be able to pick it up within 6 months and as he will be 6 years old in June he could be getting a heli for his birthday..
                      Many thanks for your advice..
