    Hi everyone,

I'm new to RC helicopters, will be buying my first one next week after ages of looking and reading and would just like a few opinions from experienced flyers if possible on a couple of points.

Fyi, my only experience so far has been 20 hours in Aerofly RC 7 Ultimate, I've gone from uncontrolled carnage to being able to fly the Align T-Rex 450 in a controlled manner with good smooth take offs and landings, hovers and general flight (I know it's a whole different ball game in real life though).

    1) I was set on getting the Align T-Rex 450 V2 Sport but right now the T-Rex 450 V2 Pro can be bought for only £10 more so I'm tempted. Reading around would suggest the Pro is a marginally better flyer and requires less maintenance but is also harder to work on and the tail is less resistant to ham fisted landings (I'll be flying on grass). Which one would you recommend and why?

    2) I want to buy the kit rather than RTF because I love that sort of thing and it will be a great way to understand the helicopter for maintenance and repair. I've looked at the manuals and nothing looks too scary but where my understanding struggles is around correct flight setup both for the helicopter and programming the controller, simply because I've never done it. Is it fairly straightforward with good instructions to at least get something stable and controllable that I can then fine tune or is it hell?

    3) Wildcard question, anyone reckon going for the T-Rex 500e is a better option?

Thanks in advance for your time and opinions
FWIW, my input on your choices!

1/. Personally, I'd say go for something flybarless if you can rather than flybarrred. Flybars are pretty old news these days - everything is flybarless. Flybar cages are a nightmare to fix after a crash - makes the torque tube versus belt discussion minor in comparison.

2/. Kit is good idea - even easier to build and get it right if you choose a flybarless one as the FBL controller makes tuning more "digital" and less of a "black art"

3/. Trex 500 isn't something I'd recommend without having a club to fly at. Costs will be much higher too - not just purchase, but crash costs, battery costs, you'd need a better charger etc.

Ordinarily, I recommend beginners start with micros - but in your case as you've done so much time on the sim in advance, I think a 450 would be a really good starting point for you!

Thanks for your thoughts Tomatwalden, I'm now about 90% set on getting the Pro kit, guess I can always convert it to flybarless at a later date if I feel the need.

The cheapest upgrade with the most potential savings... buy some training gear, it'll get you through setup and your first few flights till you are comfortable with the drift on take off and landings all the while keeping your heli upright and the blades out of the dirt

Sim is pretty good at getting you to the point where you can do it anyway but for the sake of a few quid it makes those first few hops slightly less butt clenching

Looking at the Pro kit, looks like you need to supply your own receiver too. What transmitter do you have/plan to get?

Depending on your TX/RX combo, the flybarless controllers may provide a built-in RX so the price differential against the DFC (Align's FBL design) may be be as big as you think.

Also worth noting that Raj @ ALIGN-TREX.co.uk, Specialist supplier of kits and spares, heli spares for ALIGN, Goblin, EFlight, ALeeS, ELYQ, Synergy, Thunder Tiger and JR RC (Radio Controlled) Helicopters Model Helicopters has cheaper prices! (£30 on the one you're currently looking at!)

I was thinking of the Spektrum DX6i with the AR610. Need to try to keep the costs reasonable to start.

Thanks for the info re: ALIGN-TREX.co.uk, will have a nosey and see what they have

I appreciate this won't tick your "want to build" box, but if you're on a budget, you may want to consider the Align 450 plus RTF. It comes with everything you need to get your started - including 6 channel transmitter (a rebranded Futaba 6 channel radio), a single LIPO and a (very!) basic charger. It's also only £42 more than the "Pro kit" you were looking at from Midland.

There's a review of it here : Trex 450 Plus DFC - A Great CP Flybarless 450 Size Helicopter For Beginners!
