  • yes another newb..... but please help

Hello all, yes i am another newbie, but i would love a bit of help. i have read the post for begginers start here and found it realy informative, i think i am going to go for the hb king2, which is where my problems beggin, where oh where would you recomend buying it, bearing in mind i am in the depths of cornwall and the interne is going to be my best option. i had a look at buzzflyer and they look to have a cracking deal, but if anyone has more recomendations they would be greatly recieved. thank again all and a mighty hello from me.

The bits I have purchased from buzzflier have been billed and delivered next day without problem.

I'm not sure how much confidence I would have in the HBK2. It looks ok, however a collegue at work with one never seems to have it flying. Either a component failure, or the light/twitchy nature in the slightest breeze along with begginer piloting skills mean I have only seen it in one piece once and that was the day it was delivered. His was an ebay purchase from Hong Kong for £80 delivered. Did require a 12v supply for the charger though. Also ready to fly does not remove the requirement to fully setup and balance the thing.

The saying buy once, buy right will be repeated here over and over. Have you considered the popular Blade 400, or even stretching to one of the Trexs?

Finally, simulator time seems to be the way to go if you dont want to spend your evening rebuilding broken helis after every session. I tried FMS (the sim you are recommended to use with the supplier esky controllers) and found it suspiciously easy. Pheonix while more expensive, feels more as I expected with the twitchyness. £80, but considering the cost of a serious crash and that you can recover £60 of that selling second hand if you decide the hobby isnt for you, it really makes sense.

    Trex 450SE V1
    - Futaba 2.4GHz.
Bladerunner Micro Mosquito - The toy.
    Pheonix -
The less expensive way to crash.

I have a Belt CP and it flies really well, but does seem very fragile - one small bin from about two feet and the training skid centre boss broke, allowing a skid to go up through the blades. Result one bent main shaft

The blades were recovered, now looking really cool in yellow, (but probably well out of balance!), and a frustrating wait for some new parts (in bulk from HK, as there is obviously going to be alot of rebuilding with it!)

I've also got a CP2, which is great when it works, but forever ordering new bits as they wear out really quickly. (The feathering shaft seems to be really weak on this one)

Reckon I should have splashed out abit more for a Blade 400. I guess you get what you pay for in this game

        Cheers

thanks loads, well i think its a bit more of the old shopping arround going on now then, but the sim was a deffo anyway, i've even managed to pin down a club just down the road from me, an they seem a friendly bunch. i know its not the smae but i used to race 5th scale cars so time and dedication is not a prob and the wife is very understanding. by the sounds of it though the blade is sounding good aswell, can you recomend a sight to find one, cheers

Try and stay clear of the Trex clones, they will work out more expensive in the long run.............

Very well said Rat... you have covered every base here and offered sound advice.
I too was thinking along the HBK route when i started and THANK GOD I DID NOT!!! They are not the ideal in terms of quality and what they offer the newbie. I found the Buzzflyer site before anything else looking for a good sub micro, which i eventually got through the "buzz fly" but the natural urge browsing the site is to go for a HBK2 or even a carbon version! and then research into e bay shows attractive offers which make it more appealing..... then i found this site and with further research came to the decision the HB was not suitable. I did go in head first with the 600 nitro but it is my pride and joy now. If i hadn't wanted to go the nitro route i would consider the blade 400 as a great start especially with the radio bundle offered. If you want to enjoy the true pleasure and satisfaction od building your first heli then consider the Align route. T rex's from the 450, 500 or 600 in electric or 600 nitro. I went nitro cos i fly at every oppertunity and don't have to consider charging expensive lipos for each flight. The pro's and cons are there to learn about and your in the right place to get the info you need

                Welcome to the forum.. enjoy.

thanks again, i was actually considering th ic route at one point with the obligitory raptor and will probably go down that road at a later date, but more for the convenience of practicing in my garden and maybe my lounge hovering, electric is the way to go for me at the mo, and boggy i had a look at that sight and it seems to be about the cheapest about for the blade so looks like they are gonna get a call from me in the next couple of days, so everyone be warned lots of questions probably coming your way, so my appologies now. cheers

Have you actually flown a helicopter yet, apart on FMS which really isn't going to help in the long run?

If you haven't purchased it buy Phoenix, you have no idea of the world of hurt coming your way unless you've amassed a few hours practising tail in hovering and such.

I agree with C-F, heli's are difficult to start with,co-axials are the way to start with training and of course phoenix FS.

That said the B400 is a good package. By the time you have swapped all the electronics out of the HBK2 for quality stuff it would cost twice as much and probably more than the B400 package. You also get spektrum free too!

Enjoy, you will get a real buzz when you start flying it!
